Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

Patter,
Your boat looks really nice. You must take real good care of it. Mine have to stay outside in the yard, and it shows.
I always wondered what that cleat is for that's on the plywood next to the mast. The rig up there still looks kinda weird.
Have you ever felt like the rudder is just a little too small?
Mine would always lose control in heavy wind, so I made a wider one and it helped.
In the spring I might rig separate boom vang, and downhaul adjustment, and maybe even an outhaul, just to give me something to mess with while I'm cruising. All my bigger boats have these, and it just doesn't seem right not to have them on the OD11.
I rigged a trailer to carry both boats at the same time. looks pretty cool.
If anyone has one in Texas, it would be fun to see ya at the beach in the spring.

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

Hi guys,

I found this thread while searching for some info on my OD 11.
I probably have one of the first ones, as the sail number is 23 i believe. What i am wondering, is how is the mast secured on your boats.
When i got mine there was nothing to secure the mast in the mast step, so i bought a mast step cup from the topper web site, and somehow stuck it in as first aid, but cannot for the life of me figure out the way it was installed originally.
can one of you guys please take a picture of the mast step and posting it online so that i can use it as a reference.
Much obliged.

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

MrNo,
Hey glad to here from another OD11 owner.
My 1st boat was #512, and the 2nd one is #1790. They are both rigged the same way.
The older boats had a piece of 3/4 inch plywood with a hole cut in it for the mast to go through. That's it. the bottom of the mast just sets in a recess on the bottom of the hull. the mast isn't really attached to anything.
I have rigged my boom vang/downhaul a few different ways over the years, but it all really works out the same. You need an eye on the plywood just behind the mast. the downhaul can attach to that. That will keep the mast in place in case of a capsize, even if the boat turtles on you.
If you zoom in on Patters picture, you can see his rig. The plywood piece is easy to make. the last couple I made I moved the hole a little forward of center, to reduce the load on the rudder when the wind picks up. It also raises the boom a little and I can see better.
Let us see your boat!
I can post more pics if you want later, but I think it's pretty much self explanatory.

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

Ahoy! Finally found my way back to this website.
Here are some pictures of my OD11 "MY BOAT." Shw was given to me 10 years ago and I've loved her ever since.
Capsize pics are from when used MY BOAT to get my US Sailing Cert.
I just picked up a Topper for my wife so I can get her out on the water. It will be interesting to see how the two handle.

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

Hey Swanny,
It's good to see I'm not the only one in the states with a working OD11!
I've wondered how the new Topper would compare to the old design OD11 too. It should be a little faster I would think, and tougher too.
My old OD has a lot of patches and the tiller/rudder broke so many times, I just started from scratch. (we used to sail it in pretty extreme conditions off the beach in Galveston Tx.) At present I have made an aluminum tiller and a newer wooden rudder.
Also new this year is a wooden dagger board, with fiberglass. It won't break.
I also sealed the ends of the mast sections, hoping that will keep it from turtling after a capsize.
