Oar Lock Questioin

I just bought some oar locks for the pram that I have just finished building (my first build). Sorry for such a rookie question, but here goes. They are the type that are open at the top, with horns. There is a pin through the horns at the top. What is this pin for?

Locking pins to hold the oars from coming out while in use?

There should be collars on your oars. Those collars & the pin thru the top of the oar lock, keep the oars from flopping out of the horse shaped horn or falling overboard if you let go of the oars while they're still in the oar lock.

Thanks. I thought they must be for holding the oara in place, but what keeps the pins from falling out? They are just sitting in the holes loose. Is there a sleeve on the oar that they slide through?

when you put the oars on, smash the end like a big long rivet. use the ball end of a ball peen hammer.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,..... To use 'em, ya gotta drill a hole through the oar,...

The hole is drilled abit small, 'n the pin is driven in, causin' a resistance fit,...

Or,... Don't use the pins,...

If ya pin the oars to the lock, they're usable in that boat only,...
unless another boat uses the same oar-locks,..
(diameters of the shafts vary)

Without the pin, the oars can be used with 'bout any rowboat, with it's own oar-locks,...

Those 'pinned' type of row locks are called "North River" row locks, and yes are designed to have the oars drilled. Easier for learning to row, however you can not feather the oars when rowing.

Thanks for the replies! It's nice for a rookie like me, to have a resource like this. I don't know anyone in my community that builds or works on boats.
I guess I will just store the lock pins for now. I can always drill the oars later. This pram will be for short distance, flat water. I hope to catch many a fish out of it. It needs some paint and varnish on the hull, then ready to launch!
