This really belogs in general engine forum but I used it on a Chrysler --SO: For those of you who do their own engine work-----

Earlier today I was down in my garage. I wanted to install a piston RIGHT NOW-- but my ring compressor was in a really safe place. That usually means a couple of hours to get it unsafe. I tried my usual trick of pressing in on the piston while compressing the ring a little at a time around the circumference with a screwdriver. But this was a semi keystone ring and wasn't cooperating. SO: I thought to myself---"Self?--what would YOU use as a ring compressor?" "Easy! Big nylon wire tie!"

Wrapped it around the ring, tightened with a pliers and presto-zingo, Or Eureka! if you are Greek, or Voila! if you are French--the piston went in like it belonged. All at a cost of about a nickel. Saved at least that much in aggravation.

excellent tip frank..i'll be trying it out soon..i'm gonna do a rebuild on a 15hp evinrude...one question though.. if your compressing the ring so it goes into the cylinder...how does it stay compressed if the zip tie wont fit between the piston and cyl wall?

I've used big hose clamps doing the same. Yep, ties will work too (the big ones). Little bit of oil, tap it in! You will be able too judge if its going in OK.
