Looks like my shift shaft o rings and bushing needs to be replaced on my early 90s Nissan extra long shaft 8hp outboard, as it leaks gear oil while tilted in the highest position up.

Looks pretty straightforward although I can’t find any info regarding this repair online.

Is it a simple as unscrew the cover that holds the shift shaft down, slide the shift shaft out, replace o-rings and bushings and then slide it back in?

Does the lower unit need to be in reverse/neutral/forward before sliding the shift shaft out?

Is there some mistake I could make which would result in me having to tear apart the whole lower unit?

Any insights or information would be greatly appreciated.

Attached are some pics

Thanks

There is a bushing with both inner and outer o rings. The inner can be tricky to do. We usually re-seal the complete LU when doing this.
