Last time I checked a criminal wouldn't bother to buy a gun from a gunshop, just get one off the street, black market style.

Seems to me that career criminals either steal a gun or buy one from someone who stole it.

People with little or no criminal history, planning a first time crime are more likely to obtain a gun legally because they don't have connections in the underworld. If they don't have, steal or buy a gun, they simply find some other means to commit their crime.

Armed citizens, on the other hand, are far less often victims of crime than unarmed citizens.

No, I have no proof of these opinions, but I have seen no proof of contradiction.
