How much rotational drag (when rotating clockwise), should a bravo / alpha one (with closed cooling) have?

Mine threw the belt off today, which resulted in the motor overhating pretty bad (hope its ok). I noticed that, I can turn it by hand but it takes much effort, and you can feel / hear the rubber impeller.

Versus the circulation pump which you can just spin with a finger and it rotates 20 times before stoping.

Considering taking it off and rebuilding it but just, wanted a definate from a boat guy. I'm a car guy. I'm only a boat guy 3 months out of the year. and its a miserable 3 months at that.

-- Joe

That's the way it's supposed to be...

Might be worth replacing the impeller if its a couple years old...

Hrmm.. Can you just replace the impeller? i was assuming, like a outdrive, it had wear plate, seals, etc that once taken apart were to be thrown away?

-- Joe

While you have the pump apart inspect it for any heat damage or warping. The impeller kit should have the backing plate and rubber seal with it. Make sure you lubricate the new impeller with dish soap to keep it from burning up upon start up. The raw water pump should be hard to turn by hand, the impellor blades are always in tight contact with the pump housing (that is how it is able to suck water). Your circulation pump is designed differently and will not suck, it will only push water (antifreeze). By the way, is there any possibility that a small pebble or similar was sucked up and momentarily locked the pump impeller(throwing the belt) ?

Very possible, or mud, or.. Thats why its coming off today for inspection, rather than just tossing a belt on.

Thanks for the help! I'll report back my progress.

-- Joe

Ya get used to it after a while.......

Anyway, buy a new impeller kit, put some Vaseline on it when replacing (never put a old impeller back-cheaper to replace)and REMEMBER that it ONLY turns one way, so put it in the right way, and DO NOT try to turn it back-wards
