Was out in the ocean the other day and just before we launched the boat I jumped into the boat to get things ready. <br />When I jumped out of the boat, my ring on my right hand got caught on a metal clip and embedded into my finger the whole 1/2" thickness of the ring half way around my finger. I had to yank on the ring to get it out of my finger. It was bleeding really bad, but luckily I had a first aid kit with me.<br />A bandaid helped but I was still boating in salt water and there was no way to avoid getting it on my finger for the 7 hours I was out boating. <br />Let me tell ya, a four inch cut that is 1/2" deep, and salt water, DO NOT MIX! <br />Take it from me, take your rings off before boating. <br />I still can't get the ring off my finger cause everytime I try, it digs right back in the cut. <br />This is going to take a long time to heal.

ouch! last time i went out i spent about 15 minutes hand turning the throttle cable back by the motor. let me tell you, that small circular piece of metal turned hard, and after ten minutes both my thumb and index finger were blistered and bleeding. but i got it tuned!

I don't have any photos but I can tell of a mate who leapt down from the cab of a Catapiller 637 motorscraper and got his ring caught on an obstruction. He didn't even know he'd lost his finger till we told him there was a pool of blood on the ground, when he looked down he fainted! Cause was a new engagement ring (onyx) his girlfriend gave him not 24hrs earlier.<br />Ross

a neighbor likes to tell a story about going out on a pontoon boat. the boat stopped for folks to swim around and some lady jumped over the rail into the water. he ring caught on the railing and the same thing happened, she hit the water but that finger never made it. all the nerves and tendons got stretched out so it couldn't be re-attached.

Might not bleed as much when the cause was lots of amps at 12 volts. My wife was a bit puzzled when I told her my new ring would be removable- until she heard the grisly explanation. I still have all 10 of my fingers, just know of some who don't.<br /><br />Pulling it off- ugh!!

Yikes! I got lucky while working on my father-in-law's bayliner. Was helping him track down a loose wire in the motor compartment when I decided to take a break and hop out of the boat. One of the cover snaps lodged perfectly under my wedding ring when I jumped the siderail. While it didn't break skin it sure left a nice purple ring for a few days!

Yea, I only wear my ring on special occasions. I grew up working in construction and had destroyed countless watches and other things. We talked about the hazzards of jewelry, and it became common practice to remove watches and what not as soon as we arrived in the mornings.

i only wear mine on rare occasions because i've had two close encounters. <br /><br />the 1st time was while welding/installing a catalytic converter. a nice glob of molten SS landed on it (we only wore gloves during removal, not usually during install). it happened so fast i didn't realize it until it was redhot. i yanked it off, along with the skin imprint. it left a burnt out ring impression for 6mos.<br /><br />well, after much coaxing by wifie, i began wearing the ring again...<br /><br />the 2nd time was by shorting on a pwr supp during a printer repair, it burnt a little and i got a hellova shock. so now i keep it on a keychain in my pocket

The wife and I just bought the boat that I have now and we were out on the Mississippi River and I was about to tie up for a while when another boat came by and I lost my glases in the river. I am about blind without my glasses and my wife doen't know how to operate my boat so with her help as using her eyes and me at the wheel what was a $10.00 ramp fee turned into a $300.00 day on the river.

My wife is not wearing her wedding ring due to being caught on a curtain railing. She was hanging curtain in our living room and was getting down from the ladder and she didn't notice that her ring got caught and nearly pulled her finger off. Good thing the railing came off and all she got was a nasty blue and purple bruise on her finger. Now she keeps the wedding ring in her purse. Lesson learned the hard way...

My hands are crucial to me mkuehnl. It is real easy to tell someone that I am married. Besides, I don't have anyone flirting with me let a lone making any offers.

Me too on that.<br />I picked up a cylinder head for a Detroit Diesel 4-71 many years back and my wedding ring crushed out of shape from the pressure on my hands. Not crushed between, just downward weight on my hand.<br />Solution: Side cutters, problem gone and never worn it since. Rings and metal watch bands are excelent conductors of electricity. my instructor at iwcc diesel school told of when he got his twist-o- flex band between a pos battery terminal and the fender of a truck, instantly red hot. as for the ring thing i know at least 6 guys who don't wear theirs for lack of a ring finger.

dont care for rings much either. my wedding ring is long gone was not even married a year when it slipped off my finger while skim boarding on san nicolas island. problem was my wife was going to wisconsin for a visit for a couple weeks. and before she left i was joking and said i was gonna take my wedding ring off and put it in the sock drawer while she was gone. well when she came back i had to explain that i lost it in the ocean. not sure she believes me to this day and we have been married 28 years.

my first wedding ring was a cheapie thank god i jumped down off a truck tire and it got caught on a clamp on air filter.luckily the ring broke and just opened up and pinched my finger.haven't worn the new one to work at all. have been a mechanic for about 15 years and still have all my fingers and like it that way.

I've ripped many jackets as they were too loose hitting corners of boats,trailers,bumpers,docks etc.

I was in basketball practice when I was a Jr. in high school and one of my teammates got his ring caught in the net. He was hanging there for a split second and then he fell, screaming. He peeled about 2 inches of skin off of his finger.

I had a very similar incident when I was in the navy. While going down ladders, through hatches, we were in the habit of grabbing the ledge of the hatch, and swinging out, skipping the last half of the ladder. There is a "knife edge" on that ledge, so the water tight gasket has a surface to seal on. My ring caught on this edge, and I was hanging from the hatch, my weight (210 lbs) supported by my ring on one finger. Nearly cut my finger off. I never wore a ring on the ship again, after that.
