...to pay someone to do these projects. The following pictures are the before and after's of priming the small parts for the engine and outdrive of my re-floor and stroker motor project. They have been either bead or sandblasted and primed with Glyptal.

Just getting these things prepped, hung and sprayed took most of two days. Thankfully the weather has held this week but that is going to change on Saturday. So much for my outdoor 'shop'. Tomorrow I pick up the motor and will give it the same treatment.

All will be overcoated with Por15 Ford Red engine enamel. Should all look pretty good against my stark white 'engine room'.

I want this drivetrain to look like new till the boat falls apart around it.

Boomyal

Nothing wrong with an outdoor shop, as long as it aint raining! Those parts are looking good. I hear that Por15 is tough stuff.

You are right about paying for services. You save hundreds if not thousands on projects by doing it yourself. Plus the satisfaction of knowing it got done THE WAY YOU WANT IT DONE!!! And, most of the time, I enjoy doing it.

There is a drawback to being the one in the family that "knows how to fix stuff" because I get called for everything from replacing a door knob to changing by brothers car thermostat this past weekend.

Keep the pics coming.

Mark

How true Mark42 how true. I also did my whole restore in my driveway, under a very low deck and in the basement. It doesn't take a fancy shop just pride in what you are doing. Looks great. Hope the weather holds out for you. Winter is coming.

Re: Now I Know why you can't afford.....

Apart from the fact that I enjoy working on my boats and outboards myself, it would cost an absolute fortune to have the work done for me, I doubt I could afford it. Outboard engineers round here charge £50-60 ($90-110) per hour, and general work on boats doesn't come much cheaper. That's twice what I earn so it makes sense to do it myself if I can, if only from a financial point of view.
I used to enjoy working on my own cars, but now I have an engineer who works for less than I do, has more tools, does a better job and does it quicker, and comes to me to do the work too! Unfortunately it no longer makes sense for me to do my own vehicle maintenance.

Boomyal, If I hung my stuff up like that, my son would think I made him a new swing!

All kidding aside, it looks like a quality job. I find if I hire out a job, sometimes when it is complete the quality is worse than if I had done it. ("Even I could have fouled it up that bad")

Here, I just made your son a different flavor swing set. The weather held today but everything is now covered with tarps. This Por15 has an 8 hr tack free drying time and it's supposed to start raining by midnight. I'm going to have to pitch a picnic canopy to paint the motor under.

The former was correct, djvan. ;) although barrel would make more sense? One of those things I've never stopped to question.

It's incredible how much space a project can suck up. You can become desperate for places to set things. Hence, the barrow idea was born out of desperation. :D Now I have to find a safe place to store them until it is time to install them. I'd use the barrow, layering the parts between towels or blankets but then where would I put the barrow to keep it out of our fast approaching 9 month rainy season???? The barrow normally is tilted up and tucked under the eaves on the side of the house.

Ah, I know, I think I still have some unused space on, in and under the Mustang. Bingo!

Regardless of what my wife says, the Mustang is good for something. After all if it hadn't been for the Mustang, these parts may have ended up on her kitchen center island. I don't want any of you having a heart attack now. There are four layers of moving blankets underneath the parts. The 'paint booth' has been disassembled just in time, it is beginning to rain here. They say it won't stop for a week.

Just a note. If drying time is any indication of the durability of a paint, I sprayed these 18 hours ago and some of the parts still finger print if you press hard enough. Por15 says not to start an engine for at least 4 days after you paint.

Okay Boomyal, the paint job is beautiful...now where do I get some dissolving rope. ;) My old floor is coming out this weekend, and I need to find out whether I am going to be able to use the rope or I need to find some other method.

Thanks,
Joe

I hate to be the bearer of bad news,,,,,,
but I have to warn ya:

You're risking your place in Heaven by defiling that Mustang is such a vile, despicable, and cavalier manner. LOL ,,

In the long run, I think God will be PO'ed at seeing what you're doing to one of his finest creations.

But-

As far as paying someone to do what you're doing:
unless you can get Hose 'A',,,,,

,,,, or even Hose 'B' to do all that for 3 dollars a week,,,,,,

it would be cheaper to just buy a new boat.
........

One thing I did notice was a cylinder shaped object that looked like the heat exchanger for a closed loop cooling system. I run a old lake water, open system on my antique I/O, that I wished I could put anti-freeze in.

If I had that system, perhaps I wouldn't need the 3 spare blocks, manifolds, crankshafts, a 5 gallon bucket full of pistons, and assorted other stuff I continuelly try to find places to put for my 'other' boat.

Whew,,,
I sure don't envy you guys trying/waiting for a clear day to mow the lawn up there, much less working to get a old boat back in the water in that climate without a climate controlled shop.

I spent almost 4 years up there about 35 miles S. of DC, at Quantico, VA, and even married a Yankee from Baltimore- much to my demise.

In that short time I was there before I bribed the guards, and escaped. I learned real quick how bad the climate in that part of the world sucks if you are trying to build a '55 Ford truck or even a boat in your driveway.
