Well, we've been fishing at our secret honey-hole pond almost every week since my prior posts. And we've met with success... and break offs. Frustrating! 😠

I hooked into another large bass a few weeks ago while using a Smithwick Devil's Horse. The fish hit the lure about 20' from me and I clearly saw the huge head come up and swallow the bait (sideways!) with a deep chuff sound! Exhilarating! But a few seconds after I set the hook, it was gone. The line acted like it broke off and came flying back toward me.

Weird stuff with the line/lure and I lost the $10 bait! I'm hoping that the lure's 9 hooks didn't get tangled up too much in the fish's face. I'd hate for it to die even after getting loose.

I'd thought the line broke, but it didn't. Somehow, the loop knot must have squeezed through the line tie. Weird.

But last night we had true success. My wife has always chosen to fish for bluegill, even very small ones and I've been been bugging her for over a decade to just use the bluegill as live bass bait.

Last night, she finally did and caught a 5 pound largemouth! (y)😁

Now she's a complete convert and wants to target the biguns from now on! 😆

I caught 2 small bass, plus a 2.6 pounder.

And the boy? The boy got skunked. Again. But this morning he actually asked me why he wasn't succeeding, so let him know what to do next time. Here's hoping he gets a big bite! 😎

Got out this morning ... hooked a 4 inch bluegill on a 3 1/2 inch deep diver crankbait. Those little guys sure are gutsy and very curious! Caught a couple smaller (10-12") smallies. Just a peaceful morning watching the sun come up and zipping up and down the lake. Always a good day when you are on the water!

Why are you using lures with 9 barbed hooks on them in the first place?

I have fished single barbless hooks since my early teens so over 50 years and have landed 50+lb Chinook salmon in white water rivers and 80lb halibut in 600ft of water and every other type of fish available on one hook with no barb.

Fishing tackle like that disgusts me.

Well salmon fishing here has manditory single unwejghted fly with barbless hook. I prefer single barbed hooks for cod vs treble hooks simply because the latter are too hard to get out of their mouths. I have no problem with people using whatever hooks they prefer as long as its legal. You shouldn't judge other people harshly because they don't share your views!

In my area, perch fishing should be hot right now...was all thru middle summer. Then mother nature started throwing east and northeast winds at us for weeks !! In my area, the fish know what direction the winds come from and east winds give them lockjaw !! East winds also give us clear skies which mean the moon is brite and minnows are hard to come by. For the last three weeks, almost 4 weeks plus, the perch have other things on there minds and the good minnows are scarce !! Looking out the window is getting boring, and the wind forecast is for more east winds for the next week plus !! A great perch season is going to end up a bust !! Has to be global warming, after all that is the reason for everything not good nowadays ....

The fall bite is almost on us here. Water temps are down 15* from summer temps. Been fishing a couple days a week it’s been slow with only a good bass or two each time. Things should start to pick up as the temps continue to drop.
Great time of year. Fishing picks up, and archery season is upon us here.

We went back out again last evening. My wife lost 2 big bass before finally hooking up with and landing a nice (almost) 5 pounder.

And the boy finally caught his first "real" bass, about a 2 1/2 pounder. He also caught a smaller bass shortly thereafter.

But! During his battle with the bigger bass, the boy's $60 Lew's reel snapped into two pieces! I had to help him get the fish landed. He worked the rod while I very awkwardly reeled in the line, but together we got it done.

I only got one small bass but helped the other 2 get theirs done. A good time for sure!

We took my 80 y.o. neighbor buddy fishing at our favorite place the night before last. He had a great time; hooked several nice bass but we weren't able to land them. The coolest one was when it jumped right over the stair railing! o_O:ROFLMAO:

I got a small bass and my wife hooked a couple as well.

We're planning on going again soon, including my buddy. :)

Yeah, going fishing with us has made a big difference in his life. Otherwise, he just stays home, works on puzzles and gets bored silly. I'm happy to bring him along.

Last week, we tested getting him up into my boat so that we could get out on the water. He got in there, but it was a major struggle and not worth the effort. Safety first, so we decided to just keep him on dry land. Working so far! :D
