I have a 1950 Evinrude 7.5 hp and no spark. Any ideas where to go from here? I'm new at this. Thanks

Re: No spark.

Welcome to Iboats.

Is this engine new to you? Has it sat around a while? If so there are some other things we may recommend you consider doing before you take her out on a successful launch, such as;

If your having problems with getting spark, it sounds like it's time to pull the flywheel and have a look-see at whats going on. Common causes are cracked coils, dirty/worn out points, or broken plug wires.
This would be a good read for you;

Re: No spark.

As stated, time to pull the flywheel and have a looksee.

If the coils are original/cracked, time to replace them. Then while the flywheel is off, inspect/clean/regap/change if necessary the points. You can usually get away with a simple dressing/cleaning and re gap. Set them to 020. Test the plug wires and replace as needed. If you install new coils, twist the coils onto the plug wires. Condensors are usually ok, but if you get new points they will come in the tune up kit. Retorque the flywheel and you are good to go.

Re: No spark.

your local napa store will have...or can get most of the parts you may need.

welcome to iboats

( nymarine.ca now has coils, tune up kits, plug wire by the foot, etc etc, hes somewhat close to you, so if you order and can wait a few days for parts to arrive, its not a bad option!)

Re: No spark.

I would imagine iboats would have them as well as any Evinrude dealer.

If you read up on these engines, the replacement coils may be like finding hen's teeth. They are the older style ones that have been long out of production, and seems like nobody's picking up the slack...

If the OMC part number I found for the coils you need is correct (580040 found in this thread); http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=402670

You may want to give these people a call; http://www.marinerecycling.com/new_parts.html
They list 2 on hand under that part number in their NLA/NOS listings...

If the coils you have on your engine are indeed junk, and you can't find a source for them, you might be on a search for the holy grail to get a NOS/used working pair. Until then, the engine will be a conversation piece. Don't know if it's possible (others may know) to convert this engine to the newer style ignition.

Re: No spark.

Rogersjetboat is correct, these coils are about impossible to find. They are most definately shot.

You can use your current laminate, and swap the coil from a universal
