No smoke from 2 stroke outboard

Hey everyone, new here to iboats but have used info from the site to restore my boat and found it extremely helpful.

But down to business... I have a Chrysler Conqueror 115 with a 78 Chrysler outboard that runs excellent but seems to emit no smoke while running. I am running the standard quicksilver oil at 45:1 ratio but the engine does not emit so much as a puff of smoke while running. Is this a bad thing? Am i missing something?

I have just done a tune up, changing the plugs and the head gasket. pistons and cylinders looked great. no problems. high compression on all cylinders.

What gives?

Re: No smoke from 2 stroke outboard

Mine only smokes on in initial start up because there is extra gas from choking it but after that there is no noticable smoke so I would say it is running well.

As long as you have you mix right no worries.

If you are certain on the mix, relax. You will make the EPA happy. My motors emit very little smoke, running Pennzoil 100% Synthetic TC-W3

my 150 ficht ram , using XD50, does not smoke a bit, even not at a cold start or long trolling periods. but with a carbed 2 troke a little smoke seems to be pretty normal.

Re: No smoke from 2 stroke outboard

Thanks all, that is good to hear. I tend to have some paranoia about little things like this.

while we're on the subject, does anyone know how much oil is too much? what will a 2 stroke outboard successfully burn without problems?

Spark plugs come cheap, powerheads do not!

Re: No smoke from 2 stroke outboard

well.. this question is in my opinion hard to anwer. it depends on the engine, on the oil you use, what kind of maintanance ( decarbing) you want to do.

i have a small 5 hp 2000 yamaha kicker and run it at 100:1 , like yamaha recommends. the engine runs well, without any issues. other will tell you- run 50:1 or richer.

i think with nowadays oils you can run the engine lean without any problems. the engine should have as much oil as required and as little as possible. excessive oil is just burned without lubricating the engine more. it fouls plugs, lowers power, gives carbone deposits on the rings and ports.

i must say i never saw a two stroke seized when there was confirmed oil mixed inside the gas but maybe the ratio was a little thin and it was confirmed that the seizing was due to oil.

i am pretty sure that there is to much discussion about the oil ratios, but nobody can quarantee you , its your engine. so just mix like the manufacturer recommends and all will be fine !

Wow i never imagined too much oil could be a bad thing. I just assumed the more extra you have the more lubrication. good info to have

very true!!!

ive ran my old Chrysler off of 50:1 for years with no problems sometimes more sometimes less deppending on the oil i use

ive also seen an improvements with Synthetic mixes (less smoak and feels to be better throtle responce)

i always mix my motors to spec.....than add a few capfulls more just to be safe. ( except my 85 rude that is spec'd at 100/1......that motor got 50/1 from new, but i wont open that can of worms(oil) again!!! lol)

no, surely not. when the engine is already lubricated by the correct mixture ratio any excessive oil will not lubricate any more since the needed parts are oiled already but be just burned with the negative aspects like carbon, lower power and fouled plugs. thats why manufacturers give recommendations- and here there are margins on different oil brands and some mistakes in mixing. follow the manufacturer and dont panic about it.

oil discussions are very old, the engines seem to be tolerant- but it is a mistake believing that giving its own margin to the manufacturers margin will prolong engine life. just search here - look how much threads you will find about fouled plugs and carboned engines and how many about engine damage due to lack of oil.

On a 4 stroke injected or a carburator. The light brown color of the sparkplug WHITE center insulator is a very good sign.

2 stroke. All colors are almost useless due to additives for more difficult lubrication & a DEFINATE burning of oil constantly in their chambers.
My Evinrude 9.9 DOES do a light tan on 100 or 75 to 1 ratio.
I split the difference. 75 to 1 ratio. :)

Sounds awesome, let's see some pics!!

Dont have much in the way of pictures, and shes a work in progress so don't judge her too hard!

Shes come a long way from when I started!!! didn't take hardly any build pictures:facepalm:

Even threw in a couple great oklahoma sunsets from the good times on the lake :)

Oh, PU-Leez! Do something with that engine. Chryslers of that age are supposed to look GOOD! Here are a couple of Chryslers for you. The one on the big boat (with me) is a 140 and the one on the small boat is a 105. As you can see from it, I swap lower units frequently. Actually, I was comparing the single exhaust to the dual exhaust (black) for performance. My first effort, the blue and white is a 90.

Beautiful boat though. You should post photos over at The Chrysler Crew. And since you are an Okie, the Chrysler nationals during the summer are within traveling distance.

I have been watching but refraining from comment on the no-smoke issue. Typically the only time you would see any smoke is at idle. If the engine is running well and the recirculating system is operating correctly, even then, it will not be excessive. Correct mixture is listed as 50-1 but most people use 48-1 (one pint oil to six gallons gas.) I actually end up at 50-1 since my six gallon tanks hold about 6 1/2 gallons topped-off.

HAHAHAHAHAA!!!! this just made my day! I immediately showed these pictures to my wife and she about had a fit :D

Yes the motor cover has been put a ways down my to-do-list BUT... I HAD to get rid of the hideous baby blue original paint first. plus its gonna take me some time to straighten out the fiberglass issues on it. (Previous owner "repaired" it) lol

And as for the smoke issue im pretty satisfied that the engine is just running well and i can rest easier knowing that

Re: No smoke from 2 stroke outboard

Yeah! I know what you mean. The hood on the 105 had a big hole in the side that was repaired with a softball sized gob of fiberglass. I had to chop out the repair and bad glass then re-fill it correctly. I also had to rebuild the lower rim with glass and epoxy. Then after removing the decals I sanded the whole cover to bare glass before priming. It has about 3 coats of primer and 5 coats of white under the mermaid decal. All the plastic trim was sanded and filled before spraying the primer and color. Parts of the plastic needed to be rebuilt. The cover has new sound insulation glued into it. All in all, I would guess that I have about 20-25 hours into it.

On the next cover which is in process, I drilled out the joining rivets and bolted and epoxied the two halves together hopefully for less vibration noise and more structural integrity.

These photos show some detail of the damage. two coats of paint over bondo, front metal strip is broken loose, the chrysler emblem is painted over and both metal 115 plates are missing,

Not gonna be fun

photos are from mid summer, notice fiberglass damage and the rotten swim plates
