I have a 2005 Larson 208 with about 350hrs. My shifter has been rough for a while...last weekend the shifter stopped working. It starts 'in forward' and will not go into reverse or neutral.
First of all...does it sound like a shifter cable issue or a controller issue? Secondly... How can I isolate the problem?
Thanks in Advance!

First, follow the manual on adjusting the linkage at the outdrive.

that involves removing the cover on the back of the drive. (item 72)

the football shaped linkage is what shifts the transmission1784733482075.png

make sure the whole assembly back there is adjusted per the manual.
(the crusty pic below is from google, along with all the other pics)

then check the cable and controls.

the control could have gone awry as well.

With that plastic cover off, Have someone watch the shifter bell crank on the outdrive while you work the control t see if it is moving as it should. It it’s not moving as it should you have a cable or control problem

Check both ends of the shift cable for attachment and also check both ends of the shift cable housing for attachment. I had the cable housing come loose and separate from the throttle/shift quadrant several years ago. Luckily I was able to lift the quadrant up from its mounting surface to find the problem. And luckily I was able to find other hardware to re-attach it.
