No air filters?

I just bought this boat with a 90hp mariner and took the cowling off and noticed the carbs have no air filters or anything preventing them from stuff getting in? Is this how it was from factory? Do these motors not come with air filters? In the picture it looks like there is supposed to be something covering the carbs.

Water is not a dusty dirty atmosphere and the cover is designed to trap any real dust particles and let them settle. On racing engines where there is no cover, they do add filters/ spark arrestors.

These carbs really came with nothing on them? Hard to believe.

It has been that way for about 100 years.----Only some of the newer 4 strokes are using air filters I believe.

That motor may have come with plastic gratings over the carb throats. They have "hooks" on top of the throat and holes for the bolt under the throat, to attach the plastic gratings.

However, as was said, air cleaners are unnecessary. The gratings kept large pieces of junk out of the throats, which was useful.

Good to know. Thanks.
