No air filter on 89 evinrude???

i was suprised when i pulled the airbox off on my 89 40hp evinrude and saw there was no airfilter. is this correct? if so i guess im just used to motors having airfilters (bikes,sleds,cars)

Uh, right ... Almost all outboards have no air filter.
