I understand the desire to protect their investments, and I get not wanting people to get hurt, but you have voluntarily agreed to play a sport based on violence, on hitting, and now the league is saying you can't hit! Let's turn it (the NFL) into flag football (NFFL - National Flag Football League) then and be done with it.

I think what really gets me is they (NFL Commish & Company) say, "Okay, we are going to start cracking down on hits with the head, and other agressive behavior, so we will fine 18 people LAST WEEK, before we put this policy in place." Why stop at last week? Go back the whole year then! They would get more fine money! Go back all of last year, while they are at it!!!! You can't fine people for legal hits, Com' On, Man!

Just had to vent!

Spearing, clothes-lining, headslaps...... I have to admit those things were always taught when I was younger.......

I guess when it is my turn to teach my grandson...... I will be limited to two hand touch.

Art I agree with your rant.

The rules are already in place, they are just enforcing them more aggressively.

I think it's all a ploy to make the scoring higher.

I disagree with you on your first point, and agree wholeheartedly with you on your second.

Why do you disagree? They already were fining people for helmet to helmet?

Seems like the NFL and NASCAR like to tinker with the rules until they screw everything up!

Boy, aint that the truth. I'm tired of NASCAR making changes everytime a guy turns around. They came out with the COT to making racing better. Well, they already did away with the wing and I thought I heard the splitter may be next. The stands are 1/2 empty and tv ratings are tanking too. They tried blaming it on the economy. Well, doesn't cost ya nothin' to sit on the couch.. They tweek things so much you hardly ever see a decent wreck. Nationwide had 10 car today. That was fun...

Now the NFL is heading down the same path... Tweek it enough and people will stop watching.

Maybe a guy has to start watching golf with all it's scandals.....

I disagree mostly with your "more aggressively" language. And they actually did reclassify some hits. What they are doing is changing the rules and their punishment policy in midseason. If the NFLPA had any strength or guts, they would be filing a grievance. It's a CBA violation, that they are letting the NFL get away with.

You are 100% correct that the NFL seems to tinker with the rules until they mess them up. The rules in place today are a joke. Especially in regards to pass interference, horsecollar tackles, the tuck rule, and even offsides. Now we have these ridiculous helmet to helmet rule changes and the "don't even think about breathing on the quarterbacks" rules, it's just silly. And they want 18 regular season games, too? Lunacy!

Spearing, Headslaps, Clotheslines are really hard to watch. If
"two-hand-touch", is your alternative for your grandson, Bob, you
should consider another sport.
I saw nothing wrong with last weekend, but alot got hurt. I didn't see
alot of spearing, no headslapping, but alot of head-to-head.
Not a fan of beating a QB to the ground. (You all prolly wouldn't mind
if Brady was beat down, but if one of the Mannings was hurt, or that
Nahlanes QB was hurt...don't get me started)
Also, I'm not sure where they get the gall to fine players who have been doing thier
jobs. (Brandon Meriwhether (sp) NE Patriots). I see something brewing with
the players association.

Re: NFL Fines .... GRRRR

Don't get me wrong, I am not in favor of spearing. However, you have to let the players play. When you get fined for a legal tackle, something is wrong. If you are not going full speed, you will miss tackles. If you are going full speed you cannot stop on a dime. If someone ducks, jukes, or otherwise moves into your line of fire, why are you fined? That is a lot of what seemed to have happened last week.

The officials are there to protect the players and enforce the rules. Don't analyze the plays a week later and determine because this person hit that person a hundredth of a second too late you are going to fine them. It doesn't matter who the player plays for, let them play.:(

Re: NFL Fines .... GRRRR

I think what they are mainly looking at is head hunters. Players just looking to take other players out of the game. If you watch football enough you can tell legit hits and the cheap shots apart. Players just aiming for the head. Players aiming for the knees. Players trying to twist legs. Late hits. Hitting defenseless players..
The science of brain injuries is really advancing. Now they are saying wrestler Chris Benoit had a lot of brain trauma from wrestling. He was part of a brain study. He told his dad that those shots to the head with chairs really hurt. He had one of the worst cases of brain bruising. The Docs say could have led to depression and erratic behavior. He killed himself and his family for no apparent reason. Not in a fit of rage. He planned it out.
Look at Ali. Brain damage.
Hitting and receiving can cause permanent brain damage. Is it worth it for our entertainment?
You can tell the part of the game violence from the head hunter violence most of the time. The cheap shots from the good shots. The fact his many player screw up by trying to make the big hit and forget basic tackling techniques. Many times it results in more yards for the offense. Many players just want to make the high light film on TV.
Then too, nothing hurts the game worse than knocking Star players out of the game due to injury.

Is it worth it for our entertainment? I have to say yes, as these guys know the drill when they sign their multimillion dollar contracts. It's a violent game that can have devastating, even deadly repercussions, and these guys know that going in.

You definitely can tell when someone is head hunting. The examples last week, all were clean, except for the Meriweather hit on Todd Heap, you could see his intent clearly.
Good thing Heap is a beast and was back in the game later.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb1CmHk9GK0&feature=player_embedded

That being said, they really need to find out HOW they are going to determine what a "devastating" hit is, vs a collision from someone ducking, or inadvertent head knocking.

They need to look at their helmets and fitment, how many helmets pop off these days, way too loose! Do you see how these guys unhook their chin straps and rehook them so easily? Way too loose!

As to the Chris Benoit deal, steroids probably had something to do with it too.

Perhaps they will start playing the game as it is supposed to be played, with defensive players actually wrapping up and tackling someone

Doctors are saying the Chris deal didn't fit the" roid rage" pattern because it looks (from the evidence) that he planned the killings. He didn't do it in a fit of rage. His brain damage from blows was extensive.

In sporting events such as boxing, wrestling, and MMA the opponents are matched according to their weight class. Its common sense you don't put a fighter that weights 125 against a heavy weight of 285.

I think the helmet to helmet is BS also, but maybe it would make better sense to make the weight differences between players less? I feel this would make the competition more equal between teams. Sorta like even in motor sports. You don't have 1500 hp engines running against ones of 200 hp.

dunno
would not bother me if football, baseball, basket ball most other sports and nascar simply went the way of the dinosaur.
maybe TV would fill in with shows focused more on history, discovery and learning.
last kid we fired knew every NFL and NBA team but could not draw a simple 3 wire DC automatic bilge pump circuit after MMI and a year at the shop.

That's the thing, the History channel is anything but history for the most part, it's all about ratings...

Re: NFL Fines .... GRRRR

IF anyone watched the giants game last night than they can see that the officials are doing a good job with that thin line of how to hit.. also all these rules go back to the way they teach you in little kids all the basics of hitting.. Boley had an amazing hit against Romo that broke his collar bone obviously a really hard hit but he did it the way they teach you. So did thomas i believe.. he had an amazing hit just like hes suppose to.. they dont need to go around bashing the hell out of each other breaking each others necks.. if they play a fair game and hit fair like boley did they can obviously make it interesting.

Tony Romo just broke his clavicle. Loosing a good player can effect the whole teams outcome.
