Doing those seals are not too bad. I just finished up doing one of my drives. You can get a full upper seal kit here on Iboats for like $20. The only other odd thing you will need is the spanner wrench to get the drive shaft off. There is a guy on E-bay that sells them cheap, but you need to spend some time with a file to get it to fit over the U-joint, otherwise it works fine.

Thanks.

I saw that seal kit, $14.39
I will try and pick one up in the next day or so. I will also replace the whole water pocket cover & water tube. I have mine soaking in WD40 right now, ready to hopefully unscrew!

I tore mine down before I read the post by Don above. I lucked out and both water pockets on '73 vintange outdrives came off with-out an issue, but then again it's been in fresh water its whole life.

Nice one. Hopefully I'll be as 'lucky'. Mine has also been freshwater only. Hell, I live way too far from saltwater!

OK, Water pocket off, without breaking bolts luckily!! Maybe luck changing?
The water pocket cover is toast!!!

Once I install the new ones and the upper seal kit I will find a thread that covers installing it back together again, hopefully enabling the gears to find Drive, Neutral & Reverse.

You only need the bottom seal, 26-96503. Going in through the exhaust opening at the front of the upper, just flick it out with a screwdriver. Then the new on is easy to put in.

Unlike an outboard, there is no detent in each of the gears (Forward, Neutral, Reverse). All you'll feel is the shaft-shaft stop turning i one direction, then the other. The extremities are forward and reverse, neutral is mid-point between.

Before you start removing ANYTHING about the water pocket cover, pressure test it. You might be lucky and it doesn't leak.

OK.. you lucky boy! Clean the gasket surface up nice and good. Use a semi-hardening gasket sealer (like Permatex #2) and some Loctite 222 on the screws.

Cheers,

Chris.....

Re: NEWBIE * disaster on first day*

Going back to the shift shaft, again it freely turns, does not let me select Neutral or Reverse, then when I did re-attach the lower to the upper again it stayed in drive.

Hmmm... If your lower shift shaft is "turning freely" (i.e. wont let you select Rev-Neu-Fwd), then it sounds like you have an issue where the lower shift shaft connects to the shift crank (there is a spline connection there). You had mentioned earlier that your are able to "lift" this shift shaft. There is an "e-ring" below the shift shaft seal/bushing that should prevent that. Were you able to play with this some more with the drive split apart? We need to figure out if you have this problem nailed before you reassemble the drive halves.

Also....did you order new screw #37 (part number 10-96411) to replace the missing screw in your pump housing?

Good job on getting the water pocket cover off, by the way!

Here is something you can do since you have it apart. Take the upper water pump housing off with the impellor, this will take the resistance of the impellor out of play and make this easier. Grab the drive shaft and turn it one way then the next, watching the prop shaft. If the prop shaft does not turn at all, you are in neutral. Now turn the small shift shaft gear one way while slowly turning the drive shaft, when you start feeling gears, turn the drive shaft one way and the next again while still turning the shift shaft gear. One way you will feel reistance and the prop shaft will start turning, turn the drive shaft the otherway and it will slip off the gear. Now turn the shift shaft gear the otherway back past neutral, and you will have the same result. Now you have found forward and reverse, back to the middle posistion with the shift shaft gear, and you are back in neutral.

Re: NEWBIE * disaster on first day*

SUCCESS!!!!!!!

I have the boat running and on the water. I am not 100% finished, I do have a few odd jobs to do. But, I wanted to say a big thank you to all that have helped me during this period. In the end I have spent around $2000 in getting it water ready and have done the following-
* Replaced the water pump, casing impeller etc,
* Replaced water pocket cover,
* Replaced all gaskets and oil in the outboard,
* Replaced all rubber exhaust tubes,
* Replaced the exhaust flapper valves,
* Replaced both exhaust manifolds and gaskets,
* Replaced the hydraulic lines from the pump to the manifold, as well as new oil etc,
* Replaced various melted wire & fuses.
As well as a few other minor bits.

Again, I'm not fully complete, as I do have a small water leak from an exhaust manifold to riser, and it has stalled 2 times. So now some minor motor work is required (service).

It does run great though. Temp averages 150-175, smooth runner, very little smoke etc.

Thanks Again,

Andy.
