Welcome to iboats Bobby. Previously owned boats are more about maintenance and condition than brand. Heck, you'll run across great names that haven't been properly cared for and less popular brands that look showroom new. It all depends on how well they were cared for.

Tell us more about your motor/drive. Got any pics to share?

hi.....welcome to iboats.

one of the smartest things you could do is to buy a trolling motor, and a trolling motor mount. and attach it to your boat.

(oh......and if you are ocean boating....dont go far).

other than that.......ill let the motor guys guide you for the oil and other questions you have.

cheers, and welcome aboard

TCW3 rated 2 cycle oil. Any brand that is tcw3 rated.
50:1 ratio. 2.6 ounces of oil per gallon of gas.

No way to convert to an outboard.

Check spark and compression before using it, use this info as a baseline for future reference.

Re: newbee Ldrive bayliner owner

What boat do you have?
Bayliner called All their boat "Capri" in the 90's.
Is it a 1600 or a 2350 ?

The L-Drive looks like a stern drive.
The stern drive does not take the Oil/Fuel, the engine does.
What engine is in the boat?
Are you sure it takes an Oil/Fuel mix?

We need a LOT more details. :D

EDIT: Just Figured out that the L-Drive is a Frankenstein'd Outboard!
You probably need the 50:1 Oil!

Hey Willie, I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the topic of an I/O using a oil mix fuel.
Bobbyblaze, let's hear more about your engine before you go adding oil to the fuel. Take a couple of pics if you can - show off that boat. . . and oh yeh, welcome to the forum. We are here for a common cause and a love for being on the water.

Belleview, this is definitely a 2 cycle engine, look them up. Outboard style 2 cycle engine top end that does not move connected to a lower unit that does move.

I have to say that I thought there would not be any of the L-Drive boats left that had not broken that one drive line piece that is totally unavailable.

It's a Force outboard mounted to a I/O drive. It will need the 2-cycle mix.

Last year I saw a maxum cuddy with L drive, running and driving fine....I would think that as long as the outdrive parts are in good shape (long shot!) the engine parts are easily available.

While I think most people will tell you the "L" drive shouldn't have happened, and while you'll never get any money back outta' the boat that you put into it ... if it's runnin' and looks reasonably good, you'll have the "belle of the ball" when you get together with boating geeks. Kinda' like driving your '76 Pinto along with a knot of gear heads ... ask me how I know

Except when the engine in the pinto blew up, you could shoe horn a v8 in there and have an insanely fast, light, sleeper car. When the engine/drivetrain on a L drive equipped boat gives up the ghost, you tow the thing to the wrecking yard and pay them to take it off your hands, and count it is a lesson learned.

Given what it is, you probably did not pay much for it. If you did, my condolences.

If you didn't, then have fun with it, and don't buy another ;)

... well, yeah. There's that I suppose. :) Still, it might be a fun ride while it lasts.

Re: newbee Ldrive bayliner owner

What you have there my friend is an OMC L drive, affectionately known as h*ll drive to owners & mechanics alike. OMC crossflow V4 powerhead grafted, through the hull, to the gearcase. A real Frankenstein. The motor itself will run forever with the right oil'n gas'n routine maintenance but below that it's a nightmare. Is there any way you can get your money back? Seriously and I'm not tryin to be a smart a**. Those things are notoriously high maintenence.

Hope I didn't ruin your day.

edit: Oops sorry that's a pic of the Force I4 inline version (sorry seem to be having trouble with pics today).

Any pics of yours?

In the pictures posted by the OP, it sure looks like the Force L drive to me. Not an OMC. Even though the rest of your description sounds the same.

My bad Don! Missed the op's pics. Been having problems lately. Have an appointment for an eye exam, and probly a new prescrition, on Wednesday. No kidding. I'll shut up 'til then ...
