WARNING!! DO NOT TRUST "NEW" transom seals. I replaced it on my 1976 SeaRay just for safety concerns 6 months ago. It was about $75 and I wasn't trying to go cheap I just noticed it was slightly less than I could get at other places that have a tendency to be a little higher and delivery time. First time in the water it started to slowly leak. I had unrelated mech. issues, so, the time in, thankfully, was short. Upon examination, it had developed an 8 inch crack on the bottom. Just because it's "New" doesn't mean that it's not "Aged" stock I guess. PS. Cracks were not evident 1 month ago!Tansom sael.jpg

That's totally unacceptable.

They should have expiration dates on anything that critical and made of rubber.

And who knows how long it was sitting on a shelf and in what environmental conditions.

It was the luck of the draw for you. Unfortunately it wasn't good for you. šŸ˜ž

If it was a genuine OMC boot there will be a part# on it. It was probably Asian.
I agree it could have been on a shelf for many years if it does have the OMC #
A genuine OMC boot can be replaced without pulling the drive with some liquid soap to slide it over the drive and not tear.

basic power
ebay

go to your local evinrude/johnson/OMC dealer

Since the Stringer was last made in 1985, when do you think OMC made the last batch of transom seals? Maybe 1995 or so? Most likely any OMC transom seal is long past it's shelf life.

I "handled" an aftermarket seal a while back at a marine store going out of biz. ( I don't know if it was sierra , glm ,etc)

The aftermarket one felt very different than oem , it felt more like a toy versus a tire type of rubber like an oem boot.

But your point is valid , who knows when those were last made and us stringer guys will be scrambling eventually to get a good one.
