STOP!
You haven't given us your exact engine/drive model.
The people giving you advise are well intentioned but could be very wrong.
Volvo's can have 2 different flush systems. one of them can only be used with the engine off! You will burn up the impeller in the raw water pump if you run the engine while using this style.
I'm sorry but even though I worked on Volvo's for over 30 years "07 Hurricane 202 with 5.0gXi" really doesn't mean much to me. Really need more info to help.
The muffs I saw posted earlier won't work with an SX. Use MerCruiser muff. Put then on from the front or back, however they fit best.
If you have an engine mounted flush connection, yes it will be a standard garden hose connection.
But you can use muffs on all Volvo Penta sterndrives. The pump on your engine will suck up hill if it isn't shot. You may have to increase RPMs to 1500 if it's weak (but that's always a good idea when you first start an engine on muffs). Of course these pumps don't "have to be below the waterline or force fed" other wise how do all the wake boats and large yachts that have the raw water pump above the waterline work?
Read your engine owners manual! If you don't have one. they are a free download from --
Use your serial number to get the right one.
Yes I’ll collect all serial numbers next time I’m at the boat (stored an hour away at the lake) then download the proper manuals and get more model specific advice. Thanks

Ok. I ran on the hose no problem but had to put my muffs on the drive just to keep the water from pouring straight out of the drive. Got the motor oil changed. Drained what looks like original gear oil. One big difference to the Merc is i don’t see any grease fittings anywhere! How do I grease the pivot points and in particular how do I grease the gimbal bearing.

oil gauge and tachometer aren’t working. Other gauges are good.
Gimbal bearing needs grease but can’t figure out how to get to it.

On my SX-M there is a grease nipple on the starboard side of the Transom Shield close to the actual transom. Grease is carried via a plastic tube to the gimbal bearing housing. It’s a funky arrangement and the plastic tube is not threaded, just sits there is its counterbores. See parts diagram pic below.

They only have my manuals in print. Are they available somewhere in pdf?

The owners manual is available for free download. The technical manuals are only available to dealers in pdf format because they pay a pretty hefty yearly fee. Consumers can purchase paper copies from the website or order them from dealers.

It sounds like you have a sealed bearing.
Yep, SX-A and newer all have sealed/non greasable bearings and no channel/zirc in the gimbal housing to allow for older style, serviceable/greasable bearings. U joints will be permalube/non greasable as well

I've read some varying opinions on this forum over the years about Volvo and Mercury going to sealed bearings/u joints and will say I haven't seen any more or less failures with either. The trick is to prevent water from entering the u joint bellows regardless of bearing/u joint style. That along with proper engine alignment and recommended drive service/inspection intervals will keep all the components operating with desired performance

I've heard that one reason Mercury went to "less maintenence" items along with discontinuing certain lubricants/sealants is from Mercnet allowing end user customers to comment/question abiut their products. A lot of DIY folks were confused about which lube or which sealer to use and where to apply it when servicing their own products. Mercury listened and thought, okay we'll make it "easier" for everybody now

No more perfect seal (grumble), no more special 101 (bigger grumble). Funny cuz when I look into the spark plug boots on new, oem Mercury plug wire kits there is a dab of what looks exactly like 101 grease. Are they keeping it strictly in house?

Yeah I finally got a manual to download from ManualsLib and in the service interval it says non serviceable or something like that. I don’t like it but that’s just what it is. Didn’t realize Merc is now doing it to. Agree it’s like motivated by the DIYers being perceived as taking business from the dealer services. Car companies have been doing this for years too.

Yup, gimbal bearings and u-joints are one of those things where it's best not to grease them if you don't have the right grease.

Could someone kindly take a photo of the oil pressure sending unit on their 5.0? I have looked all over the top of my motor and can’t find it. I thought it was supposed to be on the port rear by the distributor?

If you want perfect seal you can use Evinrude gasket sealer, still available on line I use it on any bolt threads subject to moisture

Oil pressure sensors can have different locations on different versions of 5.0 engines. Sometimes there are two of them.

The correct manual for your engine will show where it is. What’s your serial number?

A guess is, lower, aft, port side.

Ayuh,..... There are 2 oil pressure ports on a SBC,.....
One next to the distributor, the other down low, portside, just above the oil filter boss,....

Wait a minute......

Bondo?
Ayuh,.... I stand by my signature, but yes, some greases are for certain applications,......

You wouldn't want to use 2-4-C in a roller/ ball/ needle bearing, as it's too slippery, which can cause flat spots in the bearing,....
2-4-C is the best bushing type grease,....
