It will show continuity, or 0 resistance, however your particular model meter displays that.

Remove the mag plate, and put 4 light indentations in the support ring as shown below. Dont overdo it!

Fantastic High Trim! I bothers the mess out me to see the slop in these plates. How much of indentation do you recommend? .005 of an inch or so? More importantly as I've never removed one of these plates is there something underneath the plate that will sit in these indentions, and what's suppose to keep it fastened down? My '66 18hp Evinrude is getting water in the lower units gear oil. Does anyone have a link they could put up to show a diagram of where the seal, or o-ring is I need to replace in it? It's yet to see any water other than a 50 gallon plastic barrel. The little 1430 Alumacraft is only rated to 10hp and my 20' boat build is getting closer to seeing water, and I'd like have old Evelyn ready to show it around the lake. :)

Re: New to me old Johnson outboard

Also I assumed going by the model number FD19 it was a 19hp and have concluded by everyone's posts that it has to be an 18hp. When I replaced the coils and condensers in my '70 6hp Evinrude it didn't want to pull start and subsequently lightly gnawed up part of the flywheel and kinda buggered up the pickup on the coils. I thought to myself surely I know it isn't adjustable! Backed off the two flatheads and one Phillips head and pushed both coils as far toward the crankshaft as I could and tightened the screws back down. Boa hidy talking about an ehh ahh (JA) moment!

I tell ya what Rick my Uncle and I go back and forth over OMC and Mercury outboards. :) I just told him this evening that I'd rather hang on to the transom and kick my feet to power a boat than to hang a Mercury on any boat. To each is own. Ford or Chevy. OMC or Mercury...

Good read too Rick! I've admittingly beat on a stuck flywheel in conjunction with a 3 jaw puller and need to invest in a harmonic balance puller (I might have access to one though). That's the first time I've seen a spark tester! Two of my Uncles are/were mechanics by trade, and so is my younger brother. I was a residential/commercial electrician and now I'm intentionally creating arcs.

I would start a new thread regarding theseals. Might be easier.

YOu dont want to push the coils all the way in either, or your spark will suffer. That air gap is critical. There are tools to set them just right (F_R on here makes them) or align the laminations with the edge of the mounting boss, then run your nail up to ensure it does not catch.

Awesome blossom High Trim! I'd offer to buy you a COLD Bud Light and a steak sandwich if you weren't so dadgum far away Cappin'! I've learned so much the past few days doing some self research from previous threads and your guys replies on this one. I'm bout tickled pink to get out there and get this 'ol Johnson purring like a kitten :) Thanks a MILLION for ALL of your help, and sharing your knowledge and experience with me it's truly appreciated High Trim and everyone else for that matter. I wonder what people did before the internet and forums came about? Have to do some running around and go pull some wire for my cousins new furnace before I can fiddle with these outboards and I'll report back later on. Again thanks everyone and hope y'all have a fantastic day.

You aren't going to have much fun pulling a flywheel with a jaw puller for sure. When you get the right one make sure you but some grade eight bolts to replace the ones it comes with.
I am a plumber and when I went to Tech. School we were given the option of being given an electrical ticket or a parking pass. These years later I often wish I would have gone for the electrical ticket. (of course, I'm pulling your leg). Truth is I have a son who is an electrician so that base is covered for me. Glad to hear you are making progress. That is a good motor and should give you many years of dependable service. Rick.

Re: New to me old Johnson outboard

Well both coils ohmed out just about the same. The bottom cylinders' firing problem ended up being a bad plug after all. It's still running pretty roughly and not purring like I'd like it to at all. The bosses where the coils should line up flush with have been chewed up pretty badly by the flywheel due to the slop in the timing plate so getting them dead on is becoming a challenge in and of itself.

Re: New to me old Johnson outboard

I was able to get it running pretty good with everyone's help. High Trim I now see why you were trying to make your self clear and understood about making the slight indentations in the timing plate's support ring. It took some fooling with and a good coat of white lithium grease. Still a not as smooth at idle as I'd like, but MUCH better than it was yesterday. Did the same thing to the '70 6hp and have a nice crisp blue arc now. Thank you gentlemen for all of your help. I've learned an awful lot about these motors these past few days and owe it all to y'all.

Yeah it is amazing how quickly you can learn with the help of forums like this. You would practically be an outboard mechanic now if you we were in the 50s lol
