Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

On my particular motor it seems as if the bushing is to be pushed out from the top of the lower unit down into the gear case. Anyone know if there is a difference between a 1963 and a 1964 evinrude speeditwin? My manual shows pushing it from the bottom up, but it really looks like this one goes from the top down. Confused:confused: Any help would be much appreciated.

Where do i get this tool?

From the link I gave you.

Looks to me like your bushing is there. The thing you have circled in the second picture of post 16 should be the bushing, and from the looks of it it would drive down into the gear case.

Your bushing is there, the circular brass piece in the pic. The side that it is driven out from varies from motors.

See the 2 small holes in the prop shaft seal housing that you already removed? They are for driving the seal out, next time. Use a hammer and small punch.

For the drive shaft seal, use a standard seal puller available anywhere for about 5 bucks.

For the shift rod seal, Franks tool is best. IF you want to try to make your own, use a piece of 5/16" rod, ground down to 1/4" over a long taper.

You guys must be right, that brass thing has to be the bushing. I'm just confused because my manual shows the bushing being pushed from the gearcase up, but there is no way i could get this big bushing through such a tiny hole. They must have slightly changed the design from 1963 to 1964..... I tried Clicking on Franks "Contact me" link, but it just tried to open up Windows Open office, which i dont have the serial code for, so i can't see his email. Can anyone show me how to contact this guy?

So with the pictures from High trim, and the redneck ingenuity from Scurvy knave, i was able to remove the bushing! So next step is to clean all these parts off with some sort of solvent, and then replace all the seals. What solvent would you guys recommend? Brake cleaner? This makes me very happy:D

I use acetone personally, but any solvent is fine.

The 3M 847 is for reassembly. You need it for the spaghetti seal, skeg screws, I put it around the circumference of the seals (not shift rod o ring, grease there), under impeller plate. When driving in the bushing, do not over drive it, just until flush.

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

I could tell you what is reccomended, but you likely dont have it. I wouldnt go out and buy a tube for a couple drops. Any grease, preferrably water proof will work. Just a dab where the rod goes through the o ring. I add a bead of 3M around the bushing as well.

If you need help with the spaghetti seal and skeg, let us know. That is really the "hardest" part to seal.

Thanks alot man, i really appreciate all this information. So is the 3M sealant(or similar) something the company would have originally have put on? When i removed the lower unit i noticed there was no gasket between it and the upper unit, is there supposed to be some sort of gasket there?

Scotchgrip 3M 847 is the superseeded product reccomended by the dealer. It works very well.

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

Here is your parts manual

1963 Evinrude 28302A 28 hp Outboard Motor Parts

There should most definately be a spaghetti seal in the groove in the skeg piece.

I believe the OP means between the entire lower unit and the rest of the motor, where you would access the water pump at, not between the skeg and the rest of the lower. Where the lower goes on to the rest of the motor, there's not a seal that I'm aware of. There's nothing in the diagrams, and nothing I've read has ever said anything about there being one there, or using any type of sealer there.

Maybe I read it wrong, but thought he meant the skeg as he is doing seals.

As stated, no seal between the gearcase and lower unit, and no sealer necessary there.

I can't take credit for the idea. I got it from an older thread on here. Glad I could help.

Re: New to me 28hp evinrude speeditwin not spitting water

Hey you guys, the 3m 847 gasket stuff has arrived, i'm pretty sure i know what to do next, but the manual says to use Perfect seal #4 for some of the screws, does anybody know of an alternative to it that i can get at homedepot? Thanks
