new to me 1970 Johnson 25hp tiller short shaft. locked up

Never heard of jw.cd.ad.fd.rd family of engines. Tried to google that and came up with jehova witness :) I liked the point setting video, but the lower unit build was fuzzy and hard to see.

Thank you very much for everything and although this is my first johnson outboard to work on, I have been a mechanic all my life. I currently work on jet engines for a living.

The JW is the 3 HP----CD is the 5.5 / 6 hp model.---AD is the 7.5 HP model.----FD is the 18 HP and RD is the 25 / 40 HP-----All Johnson outboard motors.-----All parts are similar except for size.

well gents, I tried to remove the broke off bolt. After soaking with penetrating oil for several days and applying heat, It still broke off flush with the block :-(
So, now its powerhead removal time and a trip to the machine shop. One thing I don't have in my shop is a drill press. While its there I'll go ahead and get the cylinders honed and cleaned up.

I made a 1963 40hp Evinrude run that was frozen upside down in pond when I was young.
it came back and ran right up until I sold it years later... Old OMC never die, They just look that way!..........)

In order to hone cylinders the motor must be taken apart.
You say that, but I've seen Cody Bass pull the head on several and hone them with the piston still in there. Often times, it increased compression. Put the head back on and cranked her up. I've cleaned them up with light sand paper before when there was galded aluminum stuck to the cylinder, which brought the compression back. Never tried honing though myself with the pistons still in there. Crazy what people will do.

Yes when working on your own stuff you can do anything you want.-----When working for a camera and an audience you can do anything you want as well.----

I will be taking her apart for sure. Run a christmas tree hone thru empty cylinders, measure with t-gauges to check for out of roundness. Go back with new rings and original pistons if I can re use them after a good cleaning and inspection. Probably see about getting the block boiled out to insure all water passages are as clean/clear as possible. I plan on keeping this beauty for a good long while. I even want to pressure wash, scotchbrite, and repaint the mid/lower original green. The block had red paint under the peeling green. So it needs a good coat of paint as well. Anyone know a good source to buy some original Johnson/color marine paint?

got the powerhead off the lower! flywheel tried to complain but once i found some hardened steel bolts small enough to fit she came off with a bang! Made me jump :)

Somebody struggled with that oval cover in second picture.----Broke the 10-24NC screws and went to 1/4-20 NC in there.

Yes The P.O. Told me that happend during the last time He installed a water pump impeller. Are those supposed to be flush screws?

Okay! finally got back to continuing the disassembly of the powerhead. As I removed covers and brackets ect. I'm down to the back cover to removed the crankshaft and rods/pistons. I can't help but notice how small the actual block really is. Sort of reminds me of a briggs and stratton.

These are likely the lightest weight 25 HP you can own.------Do not look anything like a briggs & stratton I think.---Drive the TAPER dowel pins in the right direction to get it apart.---Post some pictures when tyou get it apart.

It dont look like a briggs, sort of reminds me of the size and simplicity. Those pins punch out from the back towords you when you are looking at them correct?

They come out in the direction to where the carburetor was.-----I have seen videos where folks tried to take them out the other way.----Fun to watch for me.

Ok, Got the block stripped! Don't look too awful bad. The pins came out with a few taps with a punch! Thanks for the direction racerone! I kept the rod caps/roller pins separated and I used a paint pen to mark them T, and B. I could tell it was the upper piston/rings that were sticking the most. Bottom piston slid out with hand pressure, had to gently tap the upper one out.

Ok the machine shop I was going to use no longer touches outboards. Not even to remove my broke off head bolt. So since there isn't a outboard specialty shop anywhere near me, whats the best place to send a block to for services?

Your location ?----Should be lots of good used blocks around.----Try E-bay.
