new to force/chrysler

I have an opportunity to buy a used Force (1998) 9.9hp motor and don't know that much about them. I'm going to do some more research on them tonight, but wanted to see if I can get any input here. Good motor or not? I'll use it for duck hunting in sloughs, swamps, and small lakes.

Force engines are like anything if you look after them they last but neglect them and they turn to crap. Parts are getting harder to find. On the plus side they are eraser to work on than most other outboards.

Depends on the price.
If you can find an 80's or later JohnnyRude for the same price I would get that since used parts are plentiful on ebay. Something goes out on the Force then you either have to buy new if you can get it or possibly have to wait along time for that part to come up on ebay.

If you do buy it and need parts you can always look for Gamefisher parts on ebay (unless there was a major design change from the early 90's motors) since they are the same motor and seem to be more plentiful.

They seem to be decent motors but I don't think they are quite on the same level as name brand outboards.

Force motors for the most part are very easy to work on compared to motors like johnson ,evinrude, having owned one of all three. Granted, some parts are hard to find ,but the selling price of Force motors are usually less than other makes, which is good for the buyer.They are like any motor, if not serviced or abused,they give problems.Some people bash them on here, but that is usually from people that have never owned or worked on them. I would get some more input from other force owners and make a decision,but keep us posted on what you decide. moparman

I hesitated responding for 2 reasons: 1, I own an '84, 85hp Force which is really a Chrysler motor w/ a Force tag. 2, it's an 85hp probably a lot different than a smaller motor, but i dunno.

Your motor is essentially a Mercury from my limited knowledge on any outboard, but I will say I've had great service from mine. It was extremely well taken care of & I picked up where the original owner left off. So, if the one you are looking at was taken care of, you should be OK. If not taken care of & ANY O/B abused or neglected, you could be in for a lot of headaches.

That said, welcome to the site & keep us posted w/ what you decide/do.

i have a 1988 9.9 force for my duck boat and love it i wouldnt trade for another kind easy to work very dependable but is getting a little hard to find parts
