New Tahoe Owner with Troubleshooting Question

I recently purchased a 216 Tahoe with a Mercruiser 5.0. So far I've already had a could of problems on the water. Any recommendations for troubleshooting problems on the water? How about recommended spare parts I should have on hand?

I always have a small tool kit on board and a liter of oil. I've been looking for an online parts diagram to look up part numbers.
