Show where any ACC allows 5' or even 10' separation at freeway speeds? My comments come from post 687, where are yours coming from?
If you actually have someone cut you off with 10 feet spacing at 60 mph it will definitely put on the brakes as would I even without cruise control on!

I drove from Pa. to New Orleans and back in my new toyota Cross a few weeks ago. All safeguards were turned off except adaptive cruise, and it was set on the second to last sensitive setting. If someone abruptly pulls in front of me , it brakes. If a car is exiting off a ramp, it also sometimes would brake excessively even though the car was clear. I can anticipate that now.
It appears that system maintains a 2-3-sec interval +/-. So the distance varies with speed.
Obviously, it's worse when passing through a city and the idiots that are trying to shave off 1 sec of their travel time cut in front to make that exit.

The ACC algorithm is designed to follow at a preset distance.

It does so by monitoring the distance to the target and accelerating or decelerating to maintain the distance.
Distance greater than X = acel
Distance less than X = decel

In the scenario of post 687, unless the passing vehicle decelerated after passing, the following vehicle would simply decelerate to allow the distance to increase.

If the vehicle in front is decelerating, the auto brake algorithm would engage looking at inputs noted above.

I was able to adjust the sensitivity of my Active Cruise Control radar. I changed it to "Late" which really made a difference. For example, this morning I was driving along and a big pickup pulling a work trailer pulled out in front of me, about 125 feet ahead on the right. He was moving fast. I kept the cruise on and my foot off the brake and let it work. My truck got closer while the guy turning came on out. He cleared my lane with room to spare and my ACC kept quiet. No slamming on the brakes or even flashing dash lights.

I'm learning to live with it.
