I'd recommend cutting the gunwales here...about 12" in front of the splashwell.

This will give you full access to the transom and will be fairly easy to repair when complete. You can use a Sawzall or Jig Saw, or a Grinder with a Cutting blade.

Thanks for the suggestion, Wood. I am sure having that much room to access the transom area would be enough. I will definitely need some guidance on putting it back together so that it is structurally sound. I will be using a grinder with a cutting blade to do the cutting.

I am very new to all of this and was not looking forward to separating the cap from the hull. I saw what Greg Mrozinski did with his 77 Cruise Boats restore and thought it looked much easier. I have a feeling I am getting in over my head, but I really like the lines of this boat. It reminds me of the one my brother had when I was a kid that we used to cruise Lake Murray outside of Columbia, SC. Had some good times and I am looking forward to having many more with this boat when it is done.

If I cut the gunwales there and lift off the entire splashwell, would it be possible to get it back together in a way that is structurally sound? I have seen some other threads here where cuts were made and when it was put back together, you could not even tell there was a cut made.

Would I have to go underneath the gunwales and glass from the bottom in order to get the two pieces back together?

Thanks for all of the input. I have not had a lot of time to work on the boat the last couple of weeks as I have been on the road for work. I am anxious to get to work on it, but I want to make sure of what I am doing before I cut something that shouldn't be cut. LOL.
