the paint is all scratched up- bare metal in spots.1 ft by two foot in at least 3 places. I am replaceing the transon and also changing the slashwell. i would like a jump seat on each side of the motor, but most importantly the additional room.never done anything like this before and that is why I joined the forum. I think I know what i am in for, but am i starting out stupid- I have that tendancy

Better to ask and not need the answer, then the other way around ;) Which is why I asked....

If you strip, you'll have to Zinc Chromate, or Self Etch primer the bare aluminum, after it's prepped. There are several aluminum boat and paint topics, so there's lots of info on prep and painting.

Is the bead blaster familiar w/ stripping paint off aluminum? Actual blasting sand may damage the surface if not done carefully.

Are you painting it at home? Will it mostly be a trailered boat, not slipped for more then a couple days at a time?

Get a comfy chair and dig in. There's a lot of great tin boat building over in the Starcraft forum, so check it out too.

thanks
I havnt even started to find someone to blast it, this was my father-inlaws boat so there is entimental value as well. I plan on having someone paint it since I would probably just make a mess of it. im better suited for the building than for the painting. the boat will be trailers and stored inside when completed- oh yeah thats another project.

It'll need to be shot with the zinc chromate anyway since you have the bare spots, maybe you should talk to the painter first and see what he recommends.
