Hi Everyone. I recently bought a new boat and motor. The motor is a 2004 50hp 2 stroke Johnson with oil injection. The boat is a 2004 Crestliner Angler 1600 sc with a built in fuel tank. The motor surges or loses power at WOT. The motor runs fine at first, then after a while, when at full throttle the rpm's will drop a bit then quickly go back upthen repeat. It seems to be getting worse, today it was doing this a 4000 rpm's. I don't believe this is a vent problem as I have taken the fuel cap completely off during the problem with no change. Squezzing the fuel bulb very rapidly will fix the problem. The fuel bulb is also soft, is this normal?. Again the motor is brand new, never used. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you JAY :( :)

Bulb should remain hard. If squeezing the bulb corrects the problem, it is a fuel problem. Could be something as simple as a loose connection in the fuel lines causing it to lose prime.
If you bought it new from a dealer, I would take it back.

Check the VRO pulse hose behind the starter, the starter rubs a hole in the pulse hose.

Thanks guys, I will see what I can do.
I bought the boat from a dealer on this website, which is about 12 hours away. The dealer cannot tell me what is wrong without seeing it. I would prefer not to take it all the way back. Hopefully it is nothing major. Someone suggested a new fuel pump? The motor is brand new so I would assume it should work.
Anyway thanks for the help, if anyone has anymore suggestions, please reply
Thanks Jay

Ok. I checked the fuel lines. I found one possible problem. With the motor shut off. When I pressurize the fuel bulb and wiggle the quick connect connector on the fuel line attached to the motor. Fuel will squirt out under pressure. Is this normal? with little pressure the connector tilts about 1/8" on the fuel inlet side. Should it be fairly snug? After the fuel squirts there is no pressure in the bulb. If this is the problem is there more than one type of connector, perhaps the connector is incorrect.
Please help in anyway you can.
Thanks Jay

I suspect you have found the problem. If those connections do not seal you could be sucking air instead of fuel.

Hi again, I just replaced the fuel connector with a better fitting one.. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. Does anyone know if my warranty will be covered by any authorized Johnson dealer? This problem is really driving me nuts. If anyone has some suggestions please help.

JAY

The motor and boat are new. Is the fuel tank and primer hose new too? If not, see if you can swap the fuel tank and fuel line with another to see it that fixes the problem or not.

Usually squeezing the primer bulb to keep a motor running is an indication of a failing fuel pump, clogged up carborators or clogging fuel filter. Seeing as your motor is new, it would seem slim that there is a fuel pump or carborator issue at this early stage in its use. I'm wondering if a used tank has introduced dirt/water to the fuel system, clogging the fuel filter and or messing up the carbs. Being that your motor is a two cylinder I can tell you from experience that if one cylinder is not running 100% you will really notice a major loss of power, even if the other cylinder is running 100%.

With that info at hand, I suggest inspecting/replacing the fuel filter and trying a different fuel tank and hose. The motor may be sucking air through a small leak in the fuel hose and that prevents it from pumping fuel.

Another thing to try is to disconnect the fuel hose and prop open the ball valve in the quick connector with a tooth pick. Have the connector end of the hose in a clean gas safe container and pump the bulb forcing fuel through the hose. Inspect the fuel for dirt, grit, and/or water. If everything coming out looks OK, then remove the tooth pick, and keep pumping the primer. It should get hard and stay that way for a few minutes without leaking fuel out any part of the hose. This will test for a leak between the bulb and motor end of hose, but not from the tank to bulb end of hose.

Post back about the fuel tank and hose your using and the results of testing them.

Also, check your receipt for the motor. I believe that warrentee is 1 year on new motors from Johnson/Evinrude. If you are withing the warrentee period, I would contact the dealer after checking out the fuel tank and hose.

Mark.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the quick response. The fuel tank is built into the boat which is brand new. I replaced the fuel line quick connector to the motor, I can squeeze the bulb as hard as I can with no visible fuel leaks or pressure loss. This does stay that way for a while. I don't believe it is the fuel pump seeing how it will run perfect some of the time. This thing is driving me nuts. I may take it to another dealer closer to home. I hope Johnson will cover the cost. The problem seems so minor. I am sure it is just a simple little fix seeing how the motor is brand new. I just wish I could figure this out.
Thanks Jay

A

The Motor is fixed. I am so happy.
I stayed up late last night and took apart the carbs. The floats needed some adjustment, set them parralel to the carb with a 1 3/8 drop. Found a blockage in the fuel inlet jet which was restricting fuel from filling the bowl. Not sure what is was, got lost when I blew it out with aresol carb cleaner. Took the motor out today. Ran at WOT perfectly.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Stick a fuel filter on the engine side of the bulb. Sounds like there's some crap in the tank. You can use an automotive type filter. Probably your fuel line is a 3.8" line. Fuel filters are cheap and will catch the crap from the tank.
