New Merc starter problem

Hey guys.....I have a mid 90's Merc 25 electric start that I just aquired. After a carb rebuid, I changed out the starter (AARCO). Things worked fine for the first 25 or so starts, but now when the key is engaged all I get is the solinoid click. If I manually rotate the starter shaft ( clockwise) the engine fires right up. Things work normally for a few start cycles and then the same problem occurs. What gives? I thought I'd ask here before assuming the starter was bad from the supplier. Any help appreciated.

Go to "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs, ace. Do the starter circuit troubleshooting.
