Just installed new shift cable on alpha 1-- 1986 3.0. Not sure if I got correct cable or not. In forward gear, prop locked (ccw) cable shoved in all the way into the tube and I can't get the 6" closest I get Is 6-3/4". Is something screwed up down below? With cable shoved all the way in I only have bout 1/2" sticking out of sheath to attached the 2set screws.

Did you screw the guide tube all the way down before tightening the jam nut?

Did you make sure the roller on the shift shaft arm was seated properly in the shift cable slide when you reinstalled the drive?

Yes. I can shift it while it's running by using my hand and sliding it forward and reverse. I just can't get the 6". Guide is fully seated. I'm thinking they sent me wrong part. I show 4 options for the part. And I think I need the one above the check mark. Here's serial number. What part number would u order. Lol

I wouldn't install a sierra brand alpha shift cable, only oem

I've replaced more brand new sierra cables than I care to remember
Thanks for the reply. It was the shift cable being wrong. I just now installed oem and was able to get my 6" eye-eye. However, now I can't get prop to lock in both directions. Only one or the other. Never both by adjusting the "throw" cable? Several years ago I did change out my shifter however it worked with my old worn out cables so I'd assume it should still work with new lower shift cable without any adjustments.

From memory, the throw on the control should be between 76mm and 82mm...

New oem lower shift cable installed.
Everything done exactly as to the YouTube video.
Won't go in reverse. Forward works perfectly. And the rear shift cable adjustment is in highest position. What else can I check? It's like I need little more travel to get it to lock in reverse. Thanks

Did you skip the parts about checking the system for slop? Does it shift normally using the cable?

If it was working before and now its not, recheck your installation.
Did you bottom out the shift cable in the housing?
Did you set the screw in the shift slide correctly?
Does the shift slide bottom out in the housing?
Is the guide sleeve threaded all the way into the outer sheath?

I'll go out shortly and check everything you said. Thanks.
