New Johnson J35EL CND

Purchased a Landau 14 foot boat with Johnson J35EL CND, brought it home today and checked the spark plugs. Found 2 different sizes of plugs. That might explain why he said it ran rough last time out on the water(last summer). That and there is Ice in the fuel tank. He did say not to try and use the current fuel in the tank. Current registration is 2021 so wonder about being on the water last summer with expired by a year registration.
Appears that the Champion L77J4 would be the correct plug for this engine.
I would have found this if I had ask to check for compression before buying.
It is remote steering, has a 40 pound trust troller on the front, but no batteries. So should I buy a deep cycle and a starting battery or can I get buy with just one? He said it had a carb. leak and he had purchased a gasket kit. He had a package of cork gasket material, I will order a carb kit and check out the jets and re-gasket the carb. Also watched a video on checking/replacing the water pump, looks simple enough.

First thing would be to check compression and see if motor is worth getting it running. If comp is good then get an oem factory rebuild kit for the carbs!! Just a quick clean rarely works, and a rebuild kit will give you all the proper settings to get you started. When it comes to boats and motors, cutting corners rarely works !!!

Sounds right to me. Will the fuel mix be 32:1? I will do the compression check using the pull start, since I have no battery as of now. Think I purchased the boat, and trailer, the motor came with it, free. only gave $800.00. Will know for sure when it does not leak.

Since 1964 Johnson / Evinrude run on 50:1 mix.-----If you want motor to last a few years more than a little extra oil is a good idea.

Ok, I installed 2 new plugs today. The bottom one screwed in a long way before it got tight. The top one, was tight right away, felt like it had bad treads, think this is where the wrong plug was located. I tried to check the compression before installing the plugs, difficult to do when you are using a pull rope and the com. tester needs to be held tight to the opening. None of my fitting would screw in. Seems I have an auto tester not an outboard tester. Best I got was 50 lbs. compression, I poured some TWC in each cylinder over the weekend to help lube the walls before moving the pistons.
Also removed the carb. It was plenty clean and may try to get it started before I spend very much on repair kits. I will replace the 2 fuel lines.
I line from tank to fuel pump, larger line. Other line from pump to carb. smaller line. I will borrow a battery from my old wood truck and see if she will fire over. If so, I will check the water pump.

Agreed! No need to spend a lot of money if it does not have enough compression to provide sufficient power. there is an auction next Saturday with a Yamaha 8hp 4 stroker, with maybe 8 hours of use. I might try and get it, kinda small for a 14 foot long, 6 foot wide boat but I'm in no hurry these days.

Dumped the last of the contents of the fuel tank. Went to rinse out the inside and found 2 tree limbs in there.(fuel gages??) Finally got it clean, and the fuel gage reinstalled and ready to fuel up as soon as I replace the 2 fuel lines.

Lines under cover are 5/16 and 5/32”.. if you can’t find 5/32, 4mm will fit.

Ok, Grandson came over and we worked on the motor. We connected a battery to the power supply and the starter motor does not spin up fully.
As in it tries to, engages the bendix?, the gear that engages the fly wheel, but the FW does not turn. The gear is slow to drop back in the non use area, but if we rotated the FW it would drop. Pulled the plugs, hit the starter, after a few tries it did spin up pretty good. Does try with 1 plug in but not a full spinup. Does not matter which cylinder has the plug installed. Checked the compression, best we could get with 1 plug out and the compression tester installed was 60 pounds, both cylinders the same. Why would it not just whirll over, with the plugs installed. I did pour some 2 cycle oil in the cylinders to lube them a week ago.

Have an Evinrude 35hp 1978 model, same results this PM, but has closer to 75 pounds compression. Thanks in advance, Webekin

What's your battery voltage at the battery.....then voltage at the battery side of your soloniod?

Then while cranking the battery, what is your voltage at the starter side of your soloniod?

We checked the battery, it was 14.5. I can check the others today. Using the newer battery from my 1992 1\2 ton Chevy truck. Webekin

L77JC4. Go to Marineenging.com for parts breakdown, incl starter (which probably needs cleaning, and perhaps brushes). Buy or borrow a compression tester from an auto parts store -- not sure what the issue is as stated, but insure there is no cross-threading. Test without the plugs, at least initially. You might attach a jumper cable to your truck with the pos. cable on your motor to the post in the middle of the starter, neg cable to the starter mount. Crank until the needle stops rising.

Do not spend any beer tokens until compression is resolved.----The 60 PSI is either a bad gauge or blown head gasket or a worn out / damaged powerhead.
