Hi all. My raw water pump was weeping a bit so I changed the impeller, seals and O ring and refitted everything. Started engine but after a few minutes engine temp kept rising. Pulled hose off top of pump to check but no water was being pulled through. Any ideas? I have rechecked the impeller and it is still fine. Volvo Penta 5.0 Gl-B

We're you in the water or on muffs to get the pump primed?

We're you attempting to suck water up from a bucket?

Did you lube the new impeller with a water soluble lube during assembly?

Check the inlet and outlet hoses?

Hi. I was still sitting in water. Yes, I lubricated the impeller before installing it. Not sure on my leg model but the attached image is from the manual I received with the boat. It runs a duo prop.

Hi. I believe that the top hose on the pump runs from the transoms so guessing that is the feed from the leg. The bottom hose runs up to the thermostat housing.

What is the part number of the GLM impeller? Hopefully 89623.

If it is 89623 then you're possibly dealing with a defective, wrong type/size, not spinning type impeller issue or you have air in the line between the drive to the impeller housing. You may have to manually help prime the water up to the housing better/more to make this easier and not hurt the new impeller if it's the correct one, etc..

Was the old impeller in bad shape? If not, maybe as another test, put it back in and see if it helps.

Carefully put your backside of your hand on the housing to see if it's getting pretty hot quickly once you start the engine, the housing should stay relatively cool by feel from the water.

The engine ran fine before with respect to cooling? How long ago?

Old impeller was intact? No rubber parts broken off and now somewhere in the engine?

Does it have a flush adapter on the engine you can connect a hose up to and give it a try?

Flush adapter cap tight so it cannot suck in air from flush adapter.

Hi. Yes, everything was fine before changing the impeller. Only changed it due to having to change the seal. Yes I do have an engine flush port.

I have the same issue. New thermostat last year and impeller. It worked great. I fired it up on the muffs yesterday and no water flow. Any tricks to break the impeller loose if it's stuck without taking the whole thing apart? Is the thermostat maybe stuck?

No such thing as a breaking the impeller loose, it either turns or it tears up. It's not the thermostat
