Hi, I am getting my first cruiser (28" Four Winns 278) in a few weeks and was wondering what essential and nice to have accessories I should be considering. First Aid kit, tools, spare parts, fenders, hook, PFDs and things like bed sheets, extra cooler, etc.

These lists could get really long . . .

Essentials:

Anchor(s) - two minimum, with rode including chain to fit the waters where you'll be using her.
Dock lines
Fenders
100'+ of good line
PFDs (all Coast Guard requirements too)
VHF
First Aid kit
Simple Tools
Spares consistent with your ability

Nice to haves:

Shore Power cord
Water hose
Boat Hook
GPS
Depth Sounder
Bed sheets . . .
Cooler (I don't like extra things on the deck unless absolutely required)
Cleaning stuff
Food
Beer

Where do we stop? Your inclusion of sheets on your list makes me wonder if I should mention a clean pair of underwear . . . :p

That's what I was looking for! We would only do long weekend trips in the Chesapeake. So I would stock the galley with just a few things as we would most likely stop at a restaurant for dinner.

Here's a few items not covered in most "need to have/nice to have" lists.. 1) snap extensions for your canvas, these little 1" extensions make tight or cold canvas easy to put up w/o stretching or tearing seams, available from defender.com, cheap.. 2)snap tool... another necessity for camper canvas chores, the tool grasps the snap and allows leverage to be used instead of the snap or canvas slipping out of your hands/fingers..3) magic eraser.. Absolutely a miracle product for cleaning most anything inside or outside the boat, scum lines, spills, non skid surfaces, galley etc. etc... 4)small bucket with a 10' rope attached to the handle... When you hoist your anchor, the last 20' or so of chain /rope and the anchor itself will most likely be muddy or dirty. You don't want to stow that rode or anchor with it caked in mud. Bring the bucket with you when you go topdeck and drop it overboard to fill w/ water, lift it back up w/ the rope and rinse your anchor/anchor roller/guide/chain etc...as you are putting the rode back in the anchor locker. 5) small battery operated fan(s).. You won't have to run the air conditioning as hard with a few fans helping to cross vent your cabin, one in the bathroom is good to have too for condensation and to vent odors out the porthole window. 6) collapsable mooring pole.. Helps fend off other boats or obstacles, helps in grabbing docks etc. etc. a must have.. That's it for now, I'm sure I'll think of other stuff.. All items listed here are cheap and make cruising easier.

Gas.. Lot's and Lot's of gas. :) As far as the bucket idea for the anchor.. I drop my anchor back into the water a few times to clean it rather than having another item to stow somewhere.

Other than that I think QC covered it pretty well.

I now find my PDA (Blackberry) one of the best boating devices ever. I get real time weather radar (I use the NOAA site as my default page) and GPS with google earth maps. Probably two of the coolest things I've ever used for boating.

Quality mask, snorkel and fins
Tool to replace canvas snaps, Get one that's like pliers, not one you need to hammer. Spare snaps too.
Marine gas grill
Throw line
Scrub brushes
Rags
Gelcoat wax
Black streak remover
SS fastener kit
1 5/8" expanding rubber freeze plug
Nerf balls of different sizes (they are fun and perfect for stuffing into a major leak in the hull)
Tapered wood plugs sized to fit each through hull and tethered to said through hulls.
Hammer

Re: New Cruiser - What accessories to buy?

Yeah, I used to plop the anchor back in a few times to clean it too, I still do that BEFORE using the bucket but dipping an anchor from the bow of a cruiser isn't easy. You'll get mud all over the front of the boat hauling up an anchor and the bucket rinses off everything. Some cruisers have a transom shower type setup on the bow just for this purpose, most don't.. It's not an extra item to store, it doubles as a bailing bucket and every boat should have a bucket of some sort on board

Raw water wash down plumbed to the anchor locker. I love having this option. also if money isn't a huge concern it is very nice to have a windlass on a boat of that size.

a GPS or a good Compass!!! there is nothing worse than FOG on the water it is very easy to lose your direction.. a small box of tools you might need, spare prop, cell phone or marine radio. there are usually free books at places that sell boats that give you a list of things you have to have and things you should have..
Have Fun!

A good up to date set of charts for the area you will be boating in. GPS is great but they can crap out on you.

Also, if you are a new boater, I would highly reccomend a boating safety course.

Go to USPS.org for courses given in your area.

Best wishes for a fun and exciting boating season :)
