Great idea, patriotic, and early in the phone book listings. But there's already American Fleet Services, and I DO NOT want to be associated with him. :(

I like it... if you do put American in the name though, just make sure that people know you'll fix the import cars too! :)

I take my VW to a shop called Courtesy Auto. I've always thought that was a great name. It's unique enough to remember (references, I was a referral years ago and have referred many since) and it says a lot about the business in just two words.

Get a thesaurus...

Re: New Business Names

Do you plan on specializing at all, or more general automotive?

I think most are worried about competence than are worried about honesty. Dishonest shops don't tend to last long.

In my case, I pretty much have learned to only take my Jeep to people who specialize in working on Jeeps. I was broke down in Toronto last spring, and found a shop called "Just Jeeps". They probably were not the cheapest, but they got the car running 100% in short order, and that's all that mattered to me.

I don't know why other non-specialized shops seem to struggle with my Jeep, but they always seem to, where the factory trained reps don't.

Ultimately, your success, especially in a small town like TC, will depend more on word of mouth than any name you pick out, So be careful only tackling jobs you know you can complete successfully.

Good Luck

Im going to show some ignorance on this, but here goes... I live on the Fort Worth side of the DFW metroplex. It seems like a lot of things are Cowtown, Longhorn, Lone Star, Silver Star, etc. What about using something similar from your area?

Wolverine auto? Sorry, thats about all I know about Michigan.

They're aint no Wolverines in TC.

It's the self described cherry capitol of the US, but the local airport grabbed that name.

Re: New Business Names

I had an epiphany this morning and a name came to me. It is simple, patriotic, and starts with an A so I'd be at he beginning of the yellow book listings.
It's American Motors Service. Wait a minute, that might get confused with the defunct auto maker. I might be beset by a bunch of Gremlins. Wouldn't that be a real Hornets nest.

But serioulsy, I'm still pondering a name, and wiaitng to see of the partner front will pan out. Since I won't know for sure when the current tenant is moving out until Thursday, I have some time yet to decide on a name before needing to file papers.

Hmmm, okay, here is another try,

"An American Mechanic Who is Honest and Fair and Will Fix Your Car Without Ripping You Off"

Okay, so it is a little long and wouldn't fit on a Phone Book line.

Be careful when looking at names, because people love to use initials to abbreviate. You don't want initials like PMS or BAD or ... Shame you have to look at every side of the equation, but you do!

I like American Motors Service. Call me crazy, but if I see a red white and blue logo -- I'll bite. :D Plus I'm kinda partial to the product AMC Jeep products they made :D :D

How about.... "The Trusty Mechanic"

"Thank you for calling The Trusty Mechanic, can I help you?"

"Ahh my cars making a weird noise -- I'm going to take it over to The Trusty Mechanic to see whats going on"

Sean

I think JustMrWill is onto something...

"Airport Road Automotive"

It starts with an A and tells people where you're located...

I like Ladyfish's suggestion, and will probably use it if I am alone in my quest. But if I take on a partner I'm probably going to use something in the way of eeboater's. And with Sean's suggestion even if I was a sole proprietor, as the business grows and I hire someone I could still add an "S" and make the name plural.

I really do appreciate all of the good ideas, advice and warm wishes. Thank you.

Re: New Business Names

Well, the day is finally here. I am opening on Monday, July 11, 2005. After much deliberation with my wife, we decided that in order to keep moving while waiting for the partner to decide we would form a LLC under the name The Trusted Mechanic LLC. And after the partner fell through we settled on the business name of Moore Automotive. So the business name is The Trusted Mechanic LLC, dba Moore Automotive.

I took heed to all you folks said about keeping it personal and using the family name. I agree with 73Baja about the fly-by-nighters and the fancy names. So we're keeping it personal.

Thank you all for your advice, wisdom and good will. If you're ever in T.C. like for the Cherry Festival, stop by and say Hi!

Re: New Business Names

I have to agree with PW2. If you are going to specialize, which is always a good idea to hook a niche in that market that is unique or different. Like specializing in Honda and Toyota repair, German auto repair, 4X4 specialist, custom mustangs and firebirds, etc.

Another way to gain immediate credability is to present yourself as established. Perhaps a name like "Generations Automotive". Just have your dad or uncle or son stop by once and while. Or something that shows you work on cars from the 50's-60's-70's-80's-90's to today. Put up old steel signs from oil manufacturers and old ads for the classics. Claim a speciality like electrical specialists. Start with the niche and your existing customer base, and build from there.

Just my two cents.
