Re: Neighborhood Associations (Rant)

If they use common sense, HOA are a good idea, but many of them get way out of control. I will never live in one of those upscale neighborhoods, just wouldnt fit it.

But I also dont want to live next to people with junk all around.

As long as there isnt any junk, and the yard is mowed, I wont complain.

The guy down the street kept his boat in the front yard for a while cause he was working on it. Every other weekend he was doing something with it. Never bothered me. Now he has it covered and neatly parked next to his house.

Ken

CC&R's were started cuz people can be idiots. In many cases it makes those who write and enforce them idiots. It is so difficult to legislate common sense. I am proud to be the trash of the neighborhood with my rusting 94 bronco in the driveway. I promised to have it replaced with a land cruiser as soon as possible.

Actually my neighbors are very nice and accomidating.

Hey guys pardon my igorance on this subject. Can somebody explain this concept to me? If I buy a house and I want to build a shed that complies to all building codes and restrictions, some dude in the neighborhood can tel me to pull it down? How legal and how binding is this? What happens if I tell him to go and get stuffed? Man, sounds like a big brother situation.

I ***HATE*** our HOA but have found that they can actually work for you.

I keep my house in good repair, and a few years back, the paint on the wood steps out front needed to be repainted so, I pick up a can of white paint. I get half way though the job, and notice that the white paint that I had selected was a few shades whiter than what it used to be and also a few shades whiter than all the neighbors. I figure, what the heck - it'll weather in a few months and tone it down a little. Well, it's still VERY white and several people since me have painted theirs VERY white also.

Last fall, I got a letter from the HOA telling me that I need to repaint my steps the proper color and battle when them for months and months about how they can't provide me the exact color name/number so how am I supposed to paint the correct color?

Because I was so angry, I demanded that they do what they are supposed to and repaint the faded lines in the street (community owned), replace a "pet waste disposal bin" that had no lid and smelled terrible, fix the sidewalk that has a dip in it so water pools there, and replace a no soliciting sign that had gone missing.

So, finally, now winter, I get them to tell me the exact paint color and also that they can't paint the parking lot now because it's too cold. WELL DUH! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO PAINT MY STEPS NOW!??! They replaced the "pet bin" with an equally as bad one, replaced the no soliciting sign, and say the sidewalk will be fixed by the end of next month.

I'm still not painting my freshly painted, good looking steps until they paint the parking lot.

Rude:

When you buy a house in those neighborhoods, you agree to their set of "rules." The theory behind it is that if everyone stays within a set standard the value of the houses in the neighborhood will remain higher, plus, you won't have any neighbors with hot pink houses and 12 ft cast iron statues of Elton John in their front yard.

Sean

I'm moving from a neighborhood without an HOA to one with. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm getting tired of looking at peoples junk and trash cans some people think are "yard art".

No more trashing my property values for people that can't clean up after themselves.

As said before, if you sign and agree, you have NO gripe. It's called a contract.

rudeafrican
depending on how the contract was written there is a legal process the association can follow up to and including hirering a crew to remove the offending parts and billing you for the work. also they can have tax lein clauses. some covenants are incredibly restrictive and legally enforcable others are not so strict and worded so as to make enforcement all but impossible. best to have a contract attorney look it over and explain it in plain english before purchasing. in towns Like Norfolk va and some surrounding towns the town code prevents any non registerd vehicles or RV's or boats or motor homes from being stored in any place visible from the street.

Waiting on the associations to adopt Car color, type of permissible clothing, hybreds only, limit on # of kids per family, income limits, control of visitors and pet breeds allowed. Sounds like socialism?

Re: Neighborhood Associations (Rant)

rudeafrican. These Home Owners Association not everywhere. They are usually put in place in upscale new developement neighborhoods under the guise of being good for the neighborhood and your property values. You sign a contract to comply when you buy the property.

Everyone must comply with the rules which can even include whether or not you can wash your car in the driveway and what kind of garbage cans you use.

Very similar to the rules used in condominium complexes.

Most of the US is not under these crazy restrictions.

Most areas just have building codes, environmental laws, and some zoning restrictions, to keep you from building a factory in a residential neighborhood.

In my state, there are approx 1 million homes. But less than 30,000 are in a home owners association.

Are you a news reporter?

Very nice example of modern journalism. Lay out the facts but throw in the "zingers" to form opinion. ;)

I noticed that allot of the people complaining about HOA's don't, or never have, lived in one.
