Ok, SBL. We've been through this a billion times. Please stop starting new threads about the same things. How about you look for a job at a restaurant or work for your parents or neighbors. You can even look through stuff at school. I tutored other kids all throughout high school. If you're good at any subject you can tutor other kids and make a lot of money.

SELL THAT BOAT AS A PROJECT TO SOMEONE IT IS NOT SAFE.

Please. Please do not ignore what we say. WE WANT TO HELP YOU.

zopper i understand my boats junk but it works. it's like have a crappy car with 300k miles on and will abandon you some were some time but it's all you have and you have to use it to make money for a new car.
Thats what it's like for me. i know i probally have the crappiest boat but it works. the transom isn't falling apart. has a new shatty deck in it and the motor needs a bit of work to get it going again.
please help me out what can i do on my boat to make money? i know i won't tow any one. But the thing is i might be able to do lobstering or quohoging but what would make more money? and what would i need for either of those jobs. or is there something else that i'm could do?

Re: need some ideas.

SBL, I've never replied to any of your threads, but I have been reading them since you arrived.

I would be worried that your current boat is just not up to the task of commercial fishing. Please be careful and make sure you have all the safety gear and a cell phone and radio to get help if you need it, and don't go offshore. As for lobsters, you need to ask around and see if there is a market in your area. Most of us have no idea if this a viable business venture or not (I'm from NC). I did a (very) little poking around and as a RI resident you can have 5 pots w/o a commercial fishing license, there are more regulations you may need to find here:

http://www.dem.ri.gov/pubs/regs/regs/fishwild/rimf15.pdf

BTW, your spelling/grammar, althugh not great, has improved dramatically in the last year. Keep it up. Also, I boat my first boat at 41, and am still trying to justify a second 5 years later. Having two at 15 you should realize how lucky you are.

I got a couple of things to say.........But first off im going to respond the above.

First off.....lil red is not a POS......its just built wrong. The deck is the only thing holding it together....it needs stringers man....a couple of good whacks from bigger waves....and its done for......straight to the bottom... Tear up the deck and add some stringers and a transom!
Woodonglass showed you a picture of how it should be done.......do it like that...and your boat will be fantastic!
Right now....do not take passengers on your boat....do not go out on your boat with out a life-jacket on. you could die....and im serious

Ok......now.....a couple of more things.

Thank you very much for using the spell checker bud....it has made a world of difference since your last post. Good on you !

I really like the way you have your head thinking towards making money. And your goal is a sail boat....not dope...not booze...a sail boat......This is fantastic in my opinion.

I think that way you have put up with our shots and keep coming back really says something about you.....it says you can persevere...even though ridiculed and scorned.....you have decided to keep the council of a bunch of middle aged guys that know where you are in life, that have been there and done that, and are willing to make helpful suggestions, and if you follow the suggestions with correct thought....nothing will stop you from succeeding. That my friend.....is fantastic. !

Now......on to you making money.
You obviously, do not want to go wash dishes at a restaurant......you seem to want self employment....I always liked that better myself.

Don't know what the weather is like in Rhode island......But cutting lawns is a really lucrative business. A lot of guys in my area are making 60 thousand dollars a year from lawn maintenance....They have several clients, and are busy 6 hours a day......the rest is time off for them. (well not really....there is a lot of marketing and book keeping to do) but...for you......you could start with a self propelled lawn mower from an auction that will cost 20 bux......from there....a couple of rakes....shovels, a weed whacker.....and you are in business ! in two months, if you work hard and sell your self to customers......you will have that sail boat. !....not next year......in two months !
25 bux a front....30 for the back....deal at 40 for both......takes you 2 hours (i mean make it look really good....weed whack...everything) that is a minimum of 20 bux an hour !!!
Im not talking about a kid walking around with a lawn mower knocking on doors and begging for money.......Im talking about printing flyers, newspaper adds, and proper marketing.
you will carry a cell phone.....and answer customers calls.......Imagine......sitting at a restaurant with a couple of chicks......your phone rings, and you answer, LAWN MASTERS....what do you think they will think of you then???? Conduct your self respectfully and properly, and you will be beating the chicks off with a stick.....I don't care if you are ugly, have pimples and teeth that are sideways.....they will go for a person that acts like a man.

Another thing you can do.....is buying and selling stuff.....I bought a clothes dryer from an auction for 5 bux.....fixed it.....and sold it for 100 dollars....in 3 years, I had built up to 2 furniture stores that were doing 1.5 million dollars a year.
But only buy and sell what you know....if you buy something and cant fix it...throw it away rather than sell it to someone Only sell what is working...for a fair price. If you sell someone something that isn't working....or tell them its something it isn't......that is ripping them off.....it is criminal....and people go to jail because of it...so be careful.....and think of the customer first.

There is two ideas for you.....you don't have to use them....but who knows....you might !

Thank you for trying to improve your spelling and communication bud

Cheers

Re: need some ideas.

I'm with Oops here SBL - I've seen the threads ... don't go out in that boat, and surely don't rely on it for an income.

In addition to Oops' suggestions, I'll also suggest that you spend some time looking for work at the local marina's and fishing docks. You obviously like boats and boating, and you need to make money. Why not try to combine the two? Make yourself up a simple resume (at your age it may not be all that impressive, but that's okay) and a good letter stating your desire to work in a marine industry (keep using spell check :D). Go as far as to put on a tie, and then go stop in some of the places near your home. You stand a good chance of finding something that you'll get to learn from and make some money at ... plus you'll probably really enjoy it.

Hope it works out for you.

+ one million for Oops and southkogs. I've read all (I think) of your threads and have never responded because I didn't have anything to say that was worth reading, but if you decide you want to put together a resume I will be more than happy to help you with it. I won't do it for you, but I'll help you edit it for spelling, grammar, form, and content.

Re: need some ideas.

Wow!! The best thread I've seen from SBL. Well thought out. Spelling and punctuation and even good grammer. Good job. all good takes. Here is how I see it. I don't want this to come off as negative, but simply as a reality check. You have 3 concepts working here. However, these are mutually exclusive topics.

1) Want to work to raise money
2) Want to work in boating or WITH your boat in order to make money.
3) Want to do it on your own time, at your convenience.

This is a 'perfect world' scenario that most of us would like to achieve. There is a saying "If the job were really THAT much fun, they wouldn't need to pay you to do it". This is rare. Even more so when the job pays well and you can do it on your own time at your own convenience.

I would focus more on a good paying, consistant job that will work the hours around your school hours. Yes, this might mean wahsing dishes or pots and pans in a restaurant. This might mean mowing lawns. This is not a great economy and there are well educated people out there working crap jobs to make ends meet. Don't narrow your focus. I'm a firm believer that young people should work. I have worked some horrible jobs, but it taught me how to appreciate hard work and to work hard for a better paying job. It taught me a lot of responsibility and I still look back on those crap jobs today to remind myself how good I have it now as compared to then. The goal of a new boat is what drives you to put up with the frustration of a crappy job. However the reward is far greater when it is achieved. The focus of a fun job on the water is not really work, it is an attempt to get paid to have fun. This will rarely pan out well.

Re: need some ideas.

making money with a boat is not as easy as it looks. Seafood looks free but it's not. Very hard work, requires lots of skill and knowledge, subject to vagaries of waether and market. It is economically as well as personally risky, especially in winter where you are. It requires equipment in great operating shape that can take hard use. And the commercial guys you are competing with will see you as a robber and will be less than helpful, shall we say.
I know; I fish, crab, clam and oyster for personal use (all my life) and have lots of friends and acquaintances ranging from professional to part time to summer jobs to recreational. Last weekend I pulled out $50 of fresh oysters in about 30 minutes--but that doesn't mean I could leverage that into anything profitable. So I ate them.

Make your money on land; spend it on the water. You are not a waterman; you are a recreational boater. Your talent is better spent through conventional work.

Re: need some ideas.

When I was a bit younger than you I had an opportunity to work on a charter fishing rig on the Great Lakes. One of my only regrets from my childhood is that I did not pursue this further.

At the time I felt obligated to fish on my dad's boat, which was a good inclination. Looking back on it, I could have made some money and learned an awful lot about fishing as a bonus.

Maybe check out your local marinas for charter boats...if you hang out, help once in a while and show some respect you might be gainfully employed before you know it.

Good luck to ya, very glad to hear that some of today's youth value hard work and independence.:)

Re: need some ideas.

i don't mind being out on the boat all day in the hot sun or cold weather.

That's not the point. You aren't "listening." Your goal is not to spend time in the fresh air, it is to make money. You asked how to reach that goal, and posed using your small old problematic boat to get into the commercial seafood business. Your proposition has been considered, discussed and rejected.
Consider another means to make money that does not involve your boat. Once again, you are pounding a square peg into a round hole.

The difference is, when you break down in the middle of nowhere with your car, you still have teh option of walking back to civilization, and the car will probably be right where you left it when you get back to it.
It could get expensive if you lose your boat out on the water. If you're already admitting to it being deficient, don't push your luck, and suffer the wrath of the EPA for your oil slick on the water..... Make your money on solid ground, don't lose it on the water..

At your age, I would concentrate now on your education, which will lead to a good career / salary in the future. Until then, take whatever part time work you can get that fits into your school / study schedule. Good luck.
