So I need a little guidance in replacing the transom on my newly acquired 1977 Starcraft Super Sport 16. The transom currently on the boat appears as though it is not the original and looks pretty decent other than a huge crack running length wise along the wood. I figured the transom should just get replaced altogether instead of trying to repair the crack. I would imagine that a split in the wood would compromise the structural integrity of the wood.
So... to replace! What wood should I use? I've heard that PT is not the way to go as chemicals in the PT process can damage aluminum. I know that in 2006 the PT industry was forced to use different chemicals in the wood but not sure if the new chemicals would have the same adverse effects on aluminum.
I watched a guy on You Tube replace the transom in his 1966 Starcraft Vhull with two 3/4" sheets of outdoor grade plywood (not PT) that were laminated together using construction adhesive. He then painted the transom to protect it from the elements. Is this a good idea?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
