Need some help on 1978 7.5hp Merc

I just changed the impeller in the water pump. Now I'm having problems installing the lower unit. Seems no matter what I try I can't get the gears and gear selector to jive with each other. Does anyone know how to install the lower unit correctly? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

dude put the shifter in neutral check to see that the lower unit is in neutral and that the prop spins freely the put it up sock it up and test all forwards neutral and reverse

I've tried that quite a few times but soon as the shift rod engages it goes into reverse and I have to start over again. Thanks for your info will try again tomorrow.

Before putting up the drive, test the shifter on the LU making sure that F is F N is N and Rev is Rev. by manually turning the shifter shaft and turning the drive shaft. are you holding the engine shifter as not to allow it to move on its own when putting it up? You can try to put the LU Up in drive wit the shifter in drive maybe then it won,t slip out when you bring the lu up to it. It,s tomatoes tamotoes when it come to F or N when putting this on
