i have a johnson 150 sea horse and it starts ok and idles at high speed just fine, but when i lower the idle speed lever all the way down to regular idle speed, it will die after about 15 seconds. also, when pulling a tube, it takes a few seconds before it will "get up and go". are the carb jets just clogged and need cleaning or could it be something else?

Re: need quick advice

could be a carb problem ,or coils(s)going out.Test for spark on all cylinders ,has the eng been running lately,if not a carb prob may be it .After testing the spark, iff all are ok.Run eng on hose and pull the sparkplug wires one at a time,if you have a cyl with no differance in peformance ,and it has spark ,you likely have a gas problem, especially if the opposite cyl is also not firing. You dont want to run the eng without getting fuel,it gets lube thru the gas.A typical check would be ,a spark ,compression test.If you have access to the tools ,do the test.

Re: need quick advice

thanks for the reply.i will check for that.for some more info on my problem, i have ran the motor the past 4 days.the first 2 days it ran pretty good, but not the way it should.it felt like it bogged down and it would miss when i first gave it throttle, after a few seconds it would finally engage and go.it has just recently had the idle problem.the reason i thought it may be a carb problem is the boat has been sitting in a barn for 4 or 5 years.when we put it up, we drained everything out of the gas tank and cleaned the motor up.i figured it had some dust or something from a gasket clogging up a jet or something.i hope this makes answering my problem a little easier.

Re: need quick advice

could be timing, did you check your timing?

Good point. Could be.
After reading that the motor was laid up for a number of years I would seriously consider a carb's rebuild and a clean out of the fuel system.

Re: need quick advice

i have to wait to get my carb rebuild kit to clean them up, however, i noticed some gas leaking out of the big orifice on my middle carb. does anybody know what can be causing that?
