Need help with my first project boat

Hello all,
New to the forum. I just bought my first project boat and need guidance on where to start. The boat came with two outboards: Evinrude 8hp (E8REDS-1996), Evinrude 60hp. The 60hp does not have the serial or model number on the transom like the smaller one did. Is there another place on the motor itself where I can id the model number and year? Also looking for suggestion for the best repair manual. Bothe have compression and spark although the compression was low on both motors 65-75 on the 8hp and 75-80 on the 60hp. Any help is appreciated!

Am I crazy “pretty open question” or is the cowling on backwards?
Finding a factory manual is your best best.
Try eBay.

Yes,I put the cowling on backwards!!!! 🤪 I threw it up there for quick pic. I’m looking for a model number on the engine to help pinpoint the year but can't find anything.

Yes, I put the cowling on backwards!!!! 🤪. I looked at the manuals on eBay. Not sure which one to get because I can't locate a model or serial number. Are the motors close enough that I can get away with 1993 or 1995 manual?

I’m thinking about this manual.

1996 Evinrude 9 hp rebuild notes

So, this is what I learned today. Any feedback about these ohm readings is appreciated.

Ignition testing
-No spark on lower spark plug. When I pulled it, it looked brand new like it jad never seen fuel.

-appears to be a faulty spark plug wire on the lower. Difficult to get a reading with ohm meter. Order two new wires.

-Trigger ohm reading=39.5, Trigger is good

-Stater ohm reading=.860, Bad stater? This reading is out of range should be between 450-600

-Upper coil output ohm reading =.285, looks good
-lower coil output on reading=no reading, bad coil?
- the coils aren’t separate like I thought they would be, looks like one piece. Think I need a new coil.

What boat is that? Looks like maybe a 14' wooden hull.

Pics can be deceiving, but it looks to me like 60hp is way too much motor. I would be thinking more in terms of a 15 to 20 hp in a regular shaft length (usually 15 to 17 inches, from the anti ventilation plate to the mounting point on the transom).

Oldboat, thanks for the reply. It’s a 16’ 1981 Lund. I had similar thoughts as you about the 60hp being too much. Not sure what I will do in the end. I just want to get both motors running if possible.

Thanks for the update. The lund may have a plate on the transom that will show a maximum horsepower.

Flashback, thanks for the reply. Connections look good but wires are old. I’m in the process of cleaning all connections. As strange as it sounds, it looks like someone left many of the components on the engines and spay painted over them.

Oldboat, I looked and found a model number but can’t find much info on it. I found an old lund catalog and it looks like its’s a Pike 16DLX. Recommended hp max is 20.
