Hello i just picked up this 25hp outboard for 400 bucks and did a test run with the muffs in the driveway and after turning it off I came back 20 minutes later and of course there’s a puddle of oil on the driveway just dripping behind and out of the prop down the skeg. Anyways I presume a need a prop shaft seal. Here’s my serial number if anyone wants to take a try at it but doing google searches for a hour trying to find the model year isn’t working. It seems like a late 80s early 90s going off cosmetics but who knows. Anyone got some secret cheat sheet for this?

1990 model. But year doesn't matter on a Mercury. Serial # is the only thing needed for the parts guide. How sure are you it's a prop seal leak? Sounds normal after running on muffs to have a puddle unturned fuel/oil mix under the skeg. What does it smell like

Likely normal and just unburnt fuel and oil but check the lower oil anyway and see how it looks.
A new to you motor should get a new impeller as well.

Smell the dripped oil. If it smells like gasoline or oil, it is fuel. If it stinks like rotten eggs, it is gearoil.

I didn’t smell it but it definitely looked like gear oil. There was so much oil it’s not normal and it was pouring out and behind the prop like a consistent flow not dripping.

Remove lower unit for water pump impeller replacement.----Drain gear oil and pressure test the gearcase.----Take action as guessing does not work.
