Re: Need HELP!!! what kind of rim/hub is this?
yes, the integral hub looks exactly like what I needed. But now, after removing the passenger side tire, I discovered that the spindle was 3/4", unlike the drivers side which was 1". Also, the passenger tire had an inner tuber under the rubber. According to the trailer shop, a tire like that would be hard to find.
I was going to buy 2 idler hubs and put the spindles through them, that way I could have a newer, more modern style tire and rim fit onto its lugs. but because of the size difference of the spindle on the passenger side. I was unable to do so. They don't have an idler hub that is small enough to fit a 3/4 " spindle, only a 1" spindle. So I would have been fine for the drivers side but not the passenger side.
So I'm sure your thinking, (so why not buy a bigger spindle for the passenger side) right???
Well.. apparently they don't make spindles like that, this spindle is tapered on both sides and has a hole drilled through it for a cotter pin on both sides of the spindle. I went to a machinist with the drivers side spindle, sleeves, castle nuts and speedy sleeves that were on them and asked how much they would charge me to duplicate that set up, and they said, just the spindle alone would be $110.00, so after getting quotes for the sleeves which went around the spindle and acted as spacers, along with the speedy sleeves which were on both sides of the tire, I got an estimate of around $540.00 for two duplicate set ups.
Soooo... this is what I decided. I decided I will just modernize the trailer, buy an axle, leaf springs, etc... and just have it welded on and be done with it. I just placed my order for those parts about 4 days ago. Out the door it was $404.22 and that's not installed. Then I will be paying another $150 - $225 to have all the old parts removed and have the new parts welded on.
The ultimate reason for deciding to modernize the trailer was. I now have a great trailer I busted my hump putting work into, it fits my boat perfectly, has all new parts attached to it, and If I have a blow out, I wont have to remove a spindle, bearings seals, and have to repack bearings, replace seals etc.. road side. With the axle, I will be able to just remove the tire & rim like any other trailer with 5 lugs and place a spare on it. Sooooo much easier.
Cant wait to be done with it, so I can FINALLY get this boat in the water.
What do you guys think?
