Re: need help identifying motor

He sure is asking a lot for it for not knowing a darn thing about it. I wouldn't even mess with it unless it was newer and then there's a chance its stolen since someone stripped it of its decals.
He has two other items on Craigslist with pictures. How come he didn't post pics of the outboard? Is he trying to hide something?
What color is it?

Re: need help identifying motor

Its gray but I think it has been painted. I think im gonna pass on it. He texted me a little while ago and said that it was an early 80's mariner 9.9. I told him I wanted him to take a pic of the model and serial number but he hasnt sent it yet. Im going to try to post the pic again to see if it will show up. I think it could be stolen becuase he will not give me the numbers, if it even has any.0612112021.jpg

It's definitely been repainted. It does look hot so stay away from it. It might be a Mariner but it looks like a smaller version of a 1980's 30hp Tohatsu I used to have.

How can you tell it's"hot"stolen.
If he gets the numbers and it's not stolen, might be a good deal.
Theres a few posts on this site on what to check.
Ask some questions: Does it run,Last time replaced impellor,Used in Saltwater...etc?
You easily check compression, general appearance, paint flaky/whiteish on motor, water in lower unit oil, among other things.
Might be a just steal of a deal and not a steal at all:)

With his original ad not even knowing the make of the motor and no pics my gut instinct tells me that it could be stolen and I should stay away from it. He has since revised his ad so it could be legit.
Regardless if the motor is stolen or not its not worth $400 for the fact that it looks like crap.

I bought a $300 dollar crap motor 3 years ago...30hp 87 Mariner.
Changed impellor, cleaned the carb;still using it and it still looks like crap.

HAHAHA... I'm not saying its a p.o.s. lemon.
When I buy something used I generally don't pay any more then what I think I can easily sell it for. When some tweeker decides to peel off decals or paint everything one shade of color including the SS hardware then generally the motor is worth about half so that outboard is worth about $200 to me.

I bought a 87' 25HP Evinrude a couple years back for $150. The guy was a duck hunter and painted everything camo on it. The lower unit was bad but I had one at home that would fit. $10 worth of paint and $15 in decals and I had a decent looking outboard. I sold my nicer looking outboard for $900 and spent the proceeds on booze, women, and chewing tobacco.
