I stripped and sanded my 1975 Starcraft hull down to shiny aluminum. I was ready to use one kind of primer (Rustoleum Self-Etching Primer in aerosol can), then I saw this stuff at Ace Hardware:

Photo of the can here: http://i.imgur.com/xcwd5qO.jpg

"Galvanized & Aluminum Primer"

The label claims "maximum adhesion for aluminum & galvanized surfaces"

The paint I'll use is an oil-based enamel from Rustoleum.

I ask about the primer, because I prefer to roll/brush it on because I don't have access to a spray gun and no experience with one. Anyone have experience with this Ace product? Will be priming/painting in the coming days. Thanks.

Use Woodonglass's formula found here: http://forums.iboats.com/forum/owners-groups-by-manufacturer/m-r/portland-pudgy/585593-paint-your-boat-for-under-100-bucks You can use the rustoleum paint with the hardener and reducer, it's completely compatible. Gave me a super hard finish very inexpensively. I'm talking ROCK hard. I gave mine a quick wet sand with 320 or 400 grit between each primer coat (no sanding the self etching) and finish coat. You can use the self etching you have with his method. I had to roll mine also. I used the "roll and roll" method with foam rollers. Just search "roll and roll" or "roll and tip" method painting a boat on this site. I am going to trailer my boat, so this works fine. If not, appropriate bottom paint would be in order.

I personally have never used it, but searching around, it seems to be pretty good stuff and holds up. --- search acrylic latex for boats..

I recently started looking into this, as my polaris pwc has caribbean blue hull, and oddly enough, my bathroom is the same color.. Going to give it a try lol

I would go to your automotive paint store and get the proper SEM self-etching primer. its only marginally more expensive than the stuff from ACE and is the right stuff to use on freshly bare aluminum.

This link will show & Tell you how to apply the paint.

I agree with using SEM Self Etching primer. Make sure to Wash the aluminum really well with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water before applying the primer. Then you only a Need a VERY light coat of the SE primer. You should still be able to see the aluminum. Then use Rustoleum Bare Metal Primer and give her two coats with a light sanding between coats. Finally apply the Rustoleum Paint with added hardener and she'll look brand new.

Roger, I'd expect that if DJ used this primer, hexd have said so.

He's been on iboats since asking w no report or further posts in this topic since August, well beyond the 90days of inactivity guideline.

Please dont post to inactive topics......

DJ, if you used this primer and wish this re-opened, PM any Mod and ask.
