Hello,
I have an evinrude 115999. It is a 115 horse and model year 1979. The trim/tilt system would work up but not down. I took it to a local repair shop. They told me that valving inside was bad and they couldn't order parts for it because they changed the whole system in the mid 90's. They quoted me $400 for a used system. I was wondering if anyone had an idea were to buy one cheaper. I don't really feel like putting $500 into a boat that i only paid $1500 for. The boat is a 1980 cajun if that matters.

Thanks

Dave

I have a good used 1984 johnson trim system off of a 115 that would work perfectly if you are interested.

Let's find out what's really wrong before you start spending money on another one. Get it home and let's start checking things. When you hit the down button does it make noise?

Re: Need Evinrude Trim System

I re-read the post and it sounds like a similar problem I had. There are two black relay's under the engine hood, on the back side of the motor (in a black electrical box). One is the up relay and the other is down, they are interchangeable. You should switch them around and see if it will go back down. I'm not sure if the shop u took it to checked this or not but if you get lucky and thats all it is, a relay is a cheap fix.

The 79 115 uses a 3 wire motor so it doesn't have relays. Yes, we're hoping it's a wiring problem but his system may be a bit different than a 2 wire system.

Re: Need Evinrude Trim System

Hello All,
Thanks for the replies. I bought a service manual before i took it to the shop. It makes a noise when it tries to go down like the motor is running. The shop told me that valving inside is messed up and they can't get the parts anymore.

Also when you press the down button it makes the noise but if i put all my weight on it(about 200 lbs) it will go down really slowly so to me i buy the valving problem. Any ideas before i purchase a new system?

thanks alot,

Dave

OK, we got juice to the motor so the wiring and motor are probably OK.

By any chance did this happen when the motor was tilted a bit and somehow maybe the motor bounced? Like if you trailered it up a little and when you got where you were going it wouldn't go down anymore?

Re: Need Evinrude Trim System

Dhadley,
I don't think so. Whenever I trailer it i bring it down to sit on the resting arm. I
've PM'ed about that johnson T & T system. Let me know if you have any other thoughts or ideas.

Thanks

Dave
