Need advice on 1960 40hp outboard

I just bought a 1960 40hp Evinrude, Is there any advice on what to do maintenance or repair wise to get it running its best before putting it in the water?
Also, it is a short shaft, but the last owner added a extension. How do I go about removing that? Should I attempt it? I am pretty good mechanically...but it?s been a while.

As someone said, check out those pages here. As for your extension, to shorten it, you'll need the shorter driveshaft, too. The water tube, you can cut to work (5" shorter), but the driveshaft you cant. Ask the previous owner if he still has the old parts. It's worth a shot.

As someone said, check out those pages here. As for your extension, to shorten it, you'll need the shorter driveshaft, too. The water tube, you can cut to work (5" shorter), but the driveshaft you cant. Ask the previous owner if he still has the old parts. It's worth a shot.

You'll also need a shorter shift rod that needs the gear box opened to change.

If it was originally a short shaft, it will have the short shift rod and a long coupler. He'll just have to replace the shift coupler with a short one, so no need to open the gearcase.
