What Do you think was the cause of the detonation could I have been revving it to high?

That's the LEAST likely cause.

Most engine damage is done by over-propping, (which causes too much load on the engine, leading to increased cylinder pressures and temperatures), neglected maintenance and water ingress.

I noticed water on my spark plugs years ago so figured my head gaskets were leaking on my 5.7L. When I pulled them i found cracks in both heads. Pistons looked fine. I found a shop with an eBay store that sold rebuilt heads and I shipped the old ones to them in exchange. It wasn’t too expensive and I’ve been very satisfied.
