I am working on a 1975 Mercury 65 Hp 3 cyl. S/N 4051811. The fellow who brought the motor to me had removed the flywheel by removing the 8 or so approx 3/8 bolts holding the wheel to the crankshaft hub. Since this flywheel only generates ac to the rectifier, can I install it at any location on the crankshaft hub? My feeling is yes. Am I correct or just dreaming?
Thanks

The marks for timing will be out.-----------So take it off again.-----Look to see if paint / rust marks will help you put it back on properly.----If that is not obvious then put the top cylinder at TDC.--------Then line up the timing mark on the distributor pulley with marks on the flywheel.--------Timing arrow is found UNDER the wee plate on the distributor.

racerone,
Thanks for the info. It sounds like you agree with me that location means nothing except for timing the motor. There is no timing decal on the flywheel nor is there a pointer. The only marks I can find are three very small dimples spaced out about 1-1/2 from each other. Would you have any info on making a substitute decal?
I am also looking for the commercial equivalent number for the retaining ring in the distributor. Any info for it?
thanks

Looks like you'll have to make a pointer it's critical for the procedure; here's the timing decal layout find the 3 inline dots and measure for each key spot, (if you get some inkjet decal paper you can make your own decal). What retaining ring do you need the one that holds the lower bearing in the dist tower? I found my decal at a solid Merc dealer and yes some dork had taken the F wheel apart on my 850 too! These are the people who should be banned from reselling their motors! Timing-Decal.jpg timingdecal-copy2.jpg

Merc850,
Thanks for the info. I ordered the retaining ring from Crowley. I do not have three dots in a vertical line as you show. Mine are individual dots all on the same centerline but spaced at approx 1 1/2" from each other. My BTDC is .125. I can alter the decal to suit. Thanks again. I will no doubt have more questions/problems requiring assistance.
Be Well
