Mysterious oozing on 9.9hp Johnson--1986

I have found something mysterious and I am dumbfounded. Whenever I run the motor and then take it out and put on a hanging stand, I have noticed oily substance oozing out of the exhaust holes ( I think it is exhaust) right above the stablizer shield near the lower gear unit and also on the prop. I replaced the gear lube oil but the oozing continues. It does not appear to be oozing while in the water running because I do not see oil floating.<br /><br />This is what I am thinking-- I started the motor once by pouring some mixed gas directly into the spark plug holes. Some of the gas was coughed out after I started it. Could it be some gas got into engine parts and is thining lube grease and therefore causing it to ooze down??<br /><br />I am a rookie at this and I am not sure whether it is safe to continue running the motor. Zman,<br />Perfectly normal.....<br />Your looking at unburned fuel/oil combined with exhaust by-products. You'll normally see this if you do a lot of slow speed trolling. Usually, running the motor 'wide-open' for a bit clears the exhaust leg. Regapping your plugs to .040 can help too.

Try a different oil, my 9.9 and 6hp will do this with some oils. They are used at low RPMs most of the time.

Zman2 - I agree with the others, but just to make sure, you might want to drain, check and then re-fill your lower unit lube to make sure it's not leaking. I doubt it, but it never hurts to make sure, plus it's cheap and easy to do.

If the oil or gunk smells bad, its from the lower unit, if it has a gas like smell or not much oder, it's a fuel & oil mix.
