Re: my install of the transom in 27 deg weather

yeah the only thing that worried me at first was the white spots in the fiberglass. First i thought it didn't soak up enough resin. But when i applied more resin the color never changed. Then i thought maybe it was trapped air. But no matter how many times i went over it with a roller it never changed. So i'm going to assume it's just the way it is.

Yes it's great to be on the water.. Still have alot to do yet. Gotta finish recovering the seats. Some wiring and very good cleaning of the whole boat

The white areas are resin starved. Looks as though the substrate wasn't wet enough when the glass was applied. Not much you can do about it now. To prevent this go heavy on the resin and cover with peel ply to prevent over saturation. In those temps you should really be controlling the climate on both sides of the laminate and vacuum bagging for the entire cure cylcle.

I've had some odd things happen when working with West in temps below 40f. This was on a tented boat running a salamander. I certainly wouldn't recommend it as I had to redo some areas where the laminate cured just fine, but the secondary bond with the substrate was abysmal. I would wait for better/more consistent weather before slinging that many dollars worth of West.

Are you keeping your cans in a cooler with a light bulb in it to keep them warm? You really need to be in those temps.

It just gets better and better...I wonder where it's going to end...lol I decided today was the day to finish installing new vinyl on the boat. When i removed the port side panels no rot was found. Removed the starboard panel and the wood that helps hold the radar arch on is mush.. Atleast it's an easy fix

Re: my install of the transom in 27 deg weather

Just an update. The boat now stays on plane at 3300 rpm's 25 mph according to gps and only sucking up 13.01 gallons of fuel per hour. Before it would stay on plane at 3800 rpm's speed 25 mph with a fuel burn of 18.89 gallons an hour. So basically i'm saving an extra 6 gallons of fuel per hour.. So in my opinion it was well worth doing.. Just got a lowrance hds-5m gps/plotter for the cheseapeke bay area. So now i have to learn how to use that...lol
